MORE than 200 performers took centre stage at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital yesterday, as the Brunei-Muara District celebrated the 70th Birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
The theme for this year’s performance was ‘Daulat Raja Merentas Zaman’ (Reverence for the Ruler Across the Centuries), which was divided into five segments.
The first segment was a Tarian Radat and Sala Rabuna song, performed by 70 students from the Pengiran Pekerma Setia Diraja Sahibul Bandar Primary School.
It was followed by the second segment, Tarian Duduk Bersimpuh, performed by 30 students from the Raja Isteri Girls High School (STPRI), depicting ancient Bruneian customs of welcoming guests.
The mood was further enlivened through a Tarian Jipin Lela Sembah, performed by 70 students from the Katok Secondary School, which again mirrored age-old Brunei traditions of receiving and honouring guests.
The fourth segment was a gulingtangan and drum performance, by the Gulingtangan Group of the Prisons Department and Universiti Brunei Darussalam, illustrating the universal appeal of music and tradition among the five main ethnic communities of Brunei.
The performance culminated with a Tarian Jipin Tar, which is from a period in time when Islam first took hold in Brunei, at the same time illustrating the country’s unity under the current leadership and integrity of His Majesty.
