SIX teams from Politeknik Brunei (PB) and Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School (SVNR) have been chosen as the winners of the ‘PortaCABIN’ competition, organised by the Brunei Association of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects’ (PUJA) Architect Division in partnership with LSL Metal Sdn Bhd.
The competition was launched in May, and represents the efforts of both agencies to acquaint students with the country’s construction and design industry.
The design competition was based around the emerging architectural movement, which challenges the notion that ‘bigger is better’.
The challenge was to design a liveable home or commercial space out of standard portable cabins, and participants were asked to focus on condensing a building down into the smallest possible space, while still creating a home or office with a pleasing atmosphere.
A group of professionals from PUJA Architect Division and LSL Metal Sdn Bhd chose the winning entries based on creative approach, functionality and response to sustainability.
In first place was Mohammad Noradha Shah bin Sarugi, Mohammad Marzuqi bin Haji Ibrahim and Mohammad Lutfi bin Abdul Wahib of Team 006, with their entry, ‘The Pitstop’.
In second place was Muhammad Syahmi bin Haji Mohd Suhaili, of Team 007, with his creation, ‘Modern Kampong Ayer House’.
In third place was Abdul Qaiyum bin Haji Shahminan, Haji Muhammad Fakri bin Haji Mat Salleh and Abdul Hakim bin Haji Haslan of Team 030, with their entry called ‘Modern Tent’.
The ‘Health Fusion Café’, created by Muhd Al Syafiq bin Saminan, Muhd Safwan bin Haji Mashor and Muhd Fadhil Faiz bin Muhd Shahdun of Team 010, was also chosen for the Best Creative Approach.
The winners will be invited to officially receive their prizes and certificates on August 13 at the Empire Hotel & Country Club, after a talk on ‘Technical Introduction of LSL Roofing and Structure Services’ by LSL Metal Sdn Bhd.
