OVER 200 medical experts has recently gathered in Guangzhou to share their knowledge, thoughts and ideas for cancer treatment during the 5th International Forum for Cancer Treatment (IFCT) convened at Junan University Affiliated Fuda Cancer Hospital, Guangzhou.

The forum was organised by the International Society of Cryosurgery and Asian Society of Cyrosurgery and was undertaken by Jinan University School of Medicine Affiliated Fuda Cancer Hospital and Dirst Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University.

Medical experts from various countries including China, United States, United Kingdom, Austria, Israel, Romania, Malaysia and Thailand took the opportunity to have discussions on the application of cryosurgery, Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) and stem cell in the field of cancer treatment.

According to Xu Kecheng, Chairman of the forum and Chief President of Jinan University School of Medicine Affiliated Fuda Cancer Hospital, the three conventional treatments for cancer are surgical resection, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Over the past 40 years, scientists have come to a deeper understanding of cancer. The research genetics and protrinology has prompted the development of targeted drugs for cancer cells.

The development of imaging technology has prompted the rise of interventional oncology, which marks a remarkable advance in cancer treatment. For example, Modern cryoablation which is represented by argon-helium cryosurgery and irreversible electroporation, have brought hope of life for patients who cannot tolerate surgery or who have unresectable tumors.

During the forum, several experts shared their experiences in performing cryoablation and IRE.

Xu Kecheng, presented a talk on ‘Survival Analysis of 8,000 Cases of Cancer Treated by Percutaneous Cryosurgery’ at the forum, which summarised the efficacy of cryosurgery done in the hospital. It was reported that Fuda Cancer Hospital took the lead in China to have introduced cryosurgery and has performed the most cases of cryosurgery in the world until today.

During the session of the forum, an IRE operation was broadcasted live to the audience. The surgeon was Professor Niu Lizhi, Executive President of Junan University School of Medicine Affiliated Fuda Cancer Hospital.

According to Professor Niu LIzhi, IRE is a novel mini-invasive technology for tumor ablation. The rationale goes as follows: during the procedure, high electric-field and ultrashort pulses are given to destroy lipid bilayer structure of cancer cell membrane and form numerous irreversible nano-sized pores in the cell membrane.

The permeability of cell membrane will be changed, to allow free access molecules of different sizes to cells, which will led to cell death. It has been approved by America FDA, European Union and Chinese FDA for clinical application.

At present, over 6,000 cases of IRE treatments have performed. It is especially advantageous in treating unresectable cancer and tumors that are close to big blood vessels, hepatic hilar region, bile duct, and ureter.

Towards the end of the forum, the participants reached a consensus that cancer treatment should be getting minimally invasive and based on fundamental experiment study.

Only by applying the latest research result can breakthrough be made in cancer treatment.
