Signing ceremony held for Chancellor’s Scholar recipients

A SCHOLARSHIP signing ceremony for two recipients of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Chancellor’s Scholar for 2018/2019 session was held at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in London on December 21.

The scholarship recipients are Adeline Poh Wern Jihn, who will be undertaking a PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Oxford and Siti Nurhazimah binti Mahmud, who is currently undertaking a Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Mechanical Engineering at the Imperial College London.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Acting High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland Pengiran Hajah Rooslina Weti binti Pengiran Haji Kamaluddin and Vice-Chancellor of UBD Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Religious Officer of the Students’ Unit in the United Kingdom Ustaz Isham bin Ismail.

Secretary of the Chancellor’s Scholar scholarship committee Haji Mohammad Ramli bin Haji Mohd Jaafar said this was the sixth Chancellor’s Scholar awarded by UBD since its introduction in 2012.

He also explained that each recipient would be given mentorship by UBD to ensure their all-around development, while advising them to be good role models in terms of their academic pursuits and in upholding the values of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).

The ceremony then continued with the signing of the scholarship agreement between the scholarship recipients and UBD, which was represented by its Vice-Chancellor.

The Chancellor’s Scholar is a prestigious scholarship that is open to outstanding students who intend to pursue academic careers.

Apart from mentorship from UBD, each recipient will undergo development and placement programmes at UBD, as well as a number of its prestigious university partners, which are geared towards their academic development and leadership skills.
