TWENTY-YEAR-OLD Harith Fakhrusy Syakirin bin Rusli has become the latest recruit to the Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) cadet pilot programme, following a signing ceremony for cadet pilots and engineering apprentices yesterday, at the RB Recreation Club in Berakas.
On hand to witness the ceremony were Haji Ibrahim bin Haji Bagol, the Head of the Scholarship Section at the Ministry of Education; Aji Puteh, the Head of Corporate Services; and Captain Saiful Bahrin, the Head of Flight Operations.
Chosen out of 125 applicants for the 46th intake, and having recently completed an intensive screening process jointly managed by RB and CTC Aviation, Harith will undergo training in the United Kingdom and New Zealand for the next 18 months. He will then be eligible for the role of First Officer aboard the Royal Brunei Airlines, and undergo type-rating training on the Airbus A320 aircraft.
RB’s Chief Executive Officer, Karam Chand, said, “We are delighted to welcome Harith into the RB cadet pilot programme. This is a proud day for him and his family, and we wish him every success in his training. RB has plans to expand the programme to meet its programme pilot requirements in the coming years, and is currently exploring other models which allow a larger pool of candidates to be recruited.

“We have received outstanding responses to our recruitment drive and hope this trend continues. The success story of our programme, and the recent global social media phenomenon of the trio of female pilots, has truly put Brunei on the aviation radar and flying careers into the minds of Bruneian youths.”
To date, a total of 177 Bruneians have been selected to join the cadet pilot programme, which is supported by the Brunei Government through the Scholarship Section of the Ministry of Education.
The programme aims to identify young Bruneians with aspirations of becoming pilots, and prepare for them for the training required as RB First Officers.
Harith told the Bulletin that he was proud and grateful to chosen for the programme. “Throughout the rigorous screen process, my leadership skills, ability to make decisions and spatial awareness were tested,” he said. “I hope that I will be able to contribute to the Royal Brunei Airlines, in my own creative way.”
