MEMBERS of Brunei Darussalam’s legal fraternity gathered for the opening of the Legal Year 2019 at the Supreme Court in the capital yesterday, vowing to look back upon their work in the past years and discussing issues of concern in their practice.
In keeping with annual tradition, Chief Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong officiated the opening of Legal Year 2019. He also inspected the guard of honour mounted by the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) personnel.
Delivering his inaugural speech, Dato Paduka Steven Chong, appointed Chief Justice in June last year, called upon the legal community to usher in the new legal year by pondering on the past years’ works and deliberating constructively on matters in law together with the Attorney General and law professionals in private practice.
Newly appointed Attorney General Dato Paduka Haji Hairol Arni bin Haji Abdul Majid and President of the Law Society On Hung Zheng also delivered speeches touching on issues and achievements in the field in the past year and efforts to enhance legal services and uphold justice in the country.
Others in attendance at the annual gathering included Special Adviser to His Majesty and Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa bin Pehin Datu Perdana Mentiri Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Ibrahim; Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud; the Chief Syar’ie Judge, the Justices and Judges of the Civil and Syariah Courts; state dignitaries; members of the Legislative Council (LegCo); heads of diplomatic missions; senior government officials; members of the judiciary from the Civil and Syariah Courts; members of the legal profession; Commissioner of Royal Brunei Police Force; the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces; and law students.
