NURUL Aqimah binti Abdullah Mohd Masyadi, a student at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) spoke to the Bulletin yesterday about her five-day attachment at the Centre for Children with Special Needs (KACA Centre), saying that it had been an interesting and informative experience for her and her schoolmates.
Nurul Aqimah, together with Nurul ‘Izzati binti Haji Kamri and another MSPSBS student, were waiting for their ‘A’ Level results when they decided to occupy themselves by engaging in volunteering activities.
“Although we didn’t get the opportunity to interact with the children at the centre, as they were away for the holidays, seeing their work and the photos of activities managed by the centre made us aware that these children are very keen on educational activities,” said Nurul Aqimah.
“It’s really unfortunate that our attachment programme coincided with their holiday break, but should the opportunity ever come up for interaction with these children in the future, we hope to volunteer again and get close with them,” she added.
Nurul ‘Izzati also shared the same sentiments. Having taken up Psychology as one of her study subjects last year, she was hoping to learn more about children with Down’s syndrome and autism by interacting with them.
“We didn’t get to do so during our five-day attachment, due to the holidays, but carrying out cleaning work for their classrooms gave me some idea about how children with special needs go through their learning process,” she said.
For the volunteer work, the three students were awarded with certificates of appreciation in a ceremony held yesterday at the KACA Centre in Kiulap.
The ceremony was held alongside a presentation of prizes for the KACA programmes and activities of 2018. On hand to present the certificates and prizes was President of KACA Dato Paduka Haji Zainal bin Haji Momin.
