WHILE qualifications are an entry ticket into the career world, graduates need to be different from the rest and keep their options open, Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Iswandy bin Ahmad said.

He made this statement at a dialogue session with 35 Post-Graduate Civic Village Programme youth participants at the Tarindak D’Seni restaurant yesterday.

Yang Berhormat Iswandy shared his life principles and motivated graduates to secure employment.

Yang Berhormat Iswandy advised the graduates to accept any available job opportunities and to ask questions instead of waiting for instructions from their superiors.

On job hunting, Yang Berhormat Iswandy said the graduates need to be consistent while looking or starting a business. He added that graduates must use an appropriate email address and to be cautious about the content being posted on their social networks.

“What you know is 20 per cent, who you know is 70 per cent and the remaining 10 per cent are your efforts,” he said. He added that if graduates are interested in working in a particular field, they should first try being an intern or a part-time employee.

For internships and work attachments, he advised the graduates to search the telephone directory or SnapFeed to check on company listings, or personally approach the companies for internship opportunities.

“The Gadong night market offers a lot in terms of marketing, sales and customer relations, and it is no harm in trying to approach the stall operators,” he said.

Yang Berhormat Iswandy also shared his experiences and achievements up to his appointment as a LegCo member, including volunteer work at the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAIDS Council) and the Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT).

He urged the youth participants to engage in volunteering activities as an opportunity to gain experience and skills, which are useful in their preparation as job hunters.
