THE Brunei Indian Chamber of Commerce (BICC) reappointed Nazeer Ahmed Zackiriah as President of the association.
Zackiriah’s reappointment was made during an executive committee meeting on reappointment and reshuffling held during the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) recently at Annajat Complex.
Zackiriah’s reselection as president comes on the back of his announcing his resignation as president, a post he has held since the chamber’s establishment in 2004, according to BICC Secretary Haji PSP Shaik Dawood.
Speaking to the Bulletin, Zackiriah, who is a prominent businessman in the local Indian community, said he announced his intention to step down as the president as he had served six terms and felt that it was time for a new face to lead the chamber.
“The BICC however insisted I stay on to lead them again for the next three years,” he said. “Seeing how much they wanted me to continue left me with no choice but to humbly accept their request. I will do my best to improve my work and commitment, and Insya Allah I will do much better for the community. I will give my best to support the government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.”
Haji PSP Shaik Dawood disclosed that the association is planning to organise more social involvement activities, and also offer more job opportunities for locals, which is one of the chamber’s main agendas.
“We will be having a programme to train more locals and fresh graduates. We want them to train in each field as we have businesses in all areas. This is our commitment to His Majesty’s government. We want to support His Majesty’s call (for businesses to hire more locals),” Haji Shaik added.
“We will also introduce internship programmes and incentives. We will talk to the Ministry of Education and education institutions and see how we can help them and establish collaborations in education.”
The BICC’s remaining lineup of executive committee members are made up of Jamnu Punjabi and Haji Mohamed Yunus as vice presidents; Haji Shaik Dawood, Haji A Kamaldeen and Haji Hidayatullah as BICC secretaries; V Jayakumar and S Ayub Khan as treasurers; Haji DM Jaffarullah as chairman; Haji Mohamed Zubair as vice chairman; Haji Abdul Munaff as adviser; and Manish V Punjabi as public relation officer.
