POETRY reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings.
It is the mainstay of oral tradition that over the centuries, can communicate the innermost values of diverse cultures.
Recognising the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), at its 30th session in Paris in 1999, declared March 21 as World Poetry Day, with the main goal of promoting the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.
To celebrate World Poetry Day 2019 and to mark Brunei’s 35th National Day, the Pantaran Sastera DBP 2019: Semarak Sastera Merdeka event was held at the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) Exhibition Hall in the capital yesterday.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin was the guest of honour.
The event was organised by the DBP through its Literature and Magazine Section in collaboration with local literature activists, associations and NGOs under the DBP Pantaran Sastera Project 2019.
The event, meant to enliven the 35th National Day celebration and showcase the country’s literary works, is open to members of the public.
