SEVERAL dental-related activities organised by the Department of Dental Services were held across the Belait District yesterday, in conjunction with World Oral Health Day (WOHD).

In Kuala Belait, the activities were held at Suri Seri Begawan Hospital. Some 200 students from Tunas Jaya PGGMB School, St James’ School and St John’s School participated in the activities.

The students participated in activities such as Dental Cinema, Dental Supermarket, Dental Musical Chair, and Little Dentist, where they learnt about the importance of oral hygiene and the benefits of proper oral practises and how they help curb tooth decay and promote overall oral health.

A dental talk was also conducted at the multipurpose hall of Anthony Abell College (AAC) in Seria for the college’s students.

Some 262 of the college’s Year 9 and Year 10 students attended the talk, entitled ‘Fake Dentistry’ and facilitated by a specialist from the Department of Dental Services.

The talk, aimed at disseminating information to the students on hazards of dental services provided by individuals not registered with the Ministry of Health, also sought to raise awareness among students on the detrimental health effects of using fake braces and fake veneers.

Organised by the FDI World Dental Federation, the principal representative body for the dental profession worldwide, WOHD is celebrated internationally every year on March 20 to raise awareness on oral health and give the dental and oral health community the opportunity to promote good oral hygiene practices, while coming up with actions to help reduce the burden of oral disease among the community.
