THE first phase of the ‘Twinning Water Village Sabah and Brunei’ project organised by students of the Public Relations Consultancy Project (PRCP) course in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was successfully launched and carried out in Kampong Weston, Beaufort on April 10.

The project is an effort to bridge the Malay-Brunei ethnic group in Kampong Weston, Beaufort with the Malay-Brunei ethnic group in Kampong Ayer, Brunei Darussalam.

Director of the PRCP Saufi Akmaluddin bin Sabli said, “This project aims to connect the community of Malay-Brunei ethnics in Kampong Ayer, Brunei Darussalam with Persatuan Masyarakat Brunei Sabah (PMBS) by fostering mutual cooperation under the ‘twinning’ concept, covering aspects of culture and tradition such as food and dances.”

The launching of the project in Kampong Weston was officiated by Chairman of PMBS Weston Haji Liman bin Haji Yussof.

Guests of honour were Ketua Anak Negeri Haji Alias bin Saifuddin, representative of the Ketua Anak Negeri Haji Sulaiman bin Panjang, Village Heads of Weston’s Land, Sea and Middle divisions Abdul Kadir bin Ali, Abdul Latif bin Haji Yusoff and Al Sulaiman bin Saidin respectively, Village Community Management Council (MPKK) Officer Ali Akhbar Li Akhbar bin Haji Anuar, and Zone Development Management (PPZ) Officer Mohd bin Mohd Salleh.

Aligned with the theme of the project Menyemai Perpaduan meaning sowing unity, students were introduced to the cultures and traditions of the Malay-Brunei ethnic in Kampong Weston.

This included aspects such as making Calak and Jelurut which are Bruneian traditional pastries, the Adai-Adai dance which is a Bruneian traditional dance and Bekarang, where students were introduced to the fishing culture of the Malay-Brunei ethnics in Kampong Weston.

The students also took part in the activities guided and supported by the residents of Kampong Weston.

Patron of PRPC Dr Syahruddin Awang Ahmad said, “Alhamdulillah, the first phase of the programme has successfully been carried out and has reached its target as stated in the tentative of the programme.”

“It is my hope that the students will be able to achieve what has been stated in the tentative, and to fulfil their set guidelines as well.

“I also hope that the students will achieve what should be achieved to the best of their abilities,” said Dr Syahruddin on the next phase of the programme.

Village Head of Weston’s Land Division Abdul Kadir Ali, 53, expressed his hopes that this project of fostering unity does not halt with the end of the project, but instead be implemented as an annual programme.

He added that such a programme would also be able to bridge the gap between students and the rural communities.

The main sponsorship of the event was provided by Sriho Auto Parts Sdn Bhd.

The next phase of the ‘Twinning Water Village Sabah and Brunei’ project is scheduled to take place in Brunei Darussalam from April 27-29.
