PLANS for a Brunei-South Korea partnership in the ICT global market were addressed on Monday, during the afternoon session of the Brunei-Korea ICT Conference at the Prime Minister’s Office Building.

Conducting the presentation was Professor Lee Soo-Young, Director at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and President-Elect of the Asia-Pacific Neural Network Society.

During the discourse, Professor Lee said that Brunei has a high potential for software development, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI): “Software industries need a relatively small investment – and people and data are two most important components of AI success.”

Regarding the collaboration between Brunei iCentre and KAIST Startup Incubator, he said that both parties should be able to work together in promoting business developments for a sustainable economic growth in Brunei Darussalam, as well as promoting investments from foreign venture capitalists to domestic start-up companies.

“The mission of the KAIST Incubator Centre is to create an entrepreneurial culture based on science and technology, to construct a growth ecosystem supporting all phases of the startup growth (Found-Grow-Collect-Retry), and to discover globally-sustainable startups with immense potential and strength,” he said.

The South Korean Government established KAIST in 1971, as a graduate school, nurturing elite scientists and engineers for industries in Korea and around the world.

With rapid industrialisation taking place in South Korea, combined with an annual growth rate of eight per cent, the Korean government has already announced an investment of one billion US dollars for AI research and development in the next five years.

Ranked in the top two among science and engineering universities in Asia, and in the top 50 world universities, KAIST has produced graduates who have played an important role in Korean economic development. Around 101 KAIST graduates are currently serving as directors in Samsung Electronics, while 144 are directors in 10 top companies in South Korea.
