NINE officials from the Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment (PMNIDAT) in Pattani, Thailand, yesterday made a working visit to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) at Jalan Tungku.

Led by Dr Paskorn Chaivanichsiri, the Deputy Director-General at Thailand’s Department of Medical Services, the delegates were welcomed by Haji Mohd Jaffari bin Haji Mahadi, the Acting Director of the NCB.

In his welcoming remarks, Haji Mohd Jaffari said that the province of Pattani had much in common with Brunei Darussalam because of their Malay Muslim populations.

“I am certain that we share similar values and are able to learn from each other. We give emphasis to the learning and practice of Islam as one of the important elements in drug abuse treatment, since the majority of the residents in the Al-Islah Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre are Muslims,” he said.

“We believe that religious beliefs and spiritual values can bring positive changes in one’s behaviour. I also believe that both of our countries have adopted a similar approach towards the therapeutic community in our respective drug centres.”

The working visit by PMNIDAT was aimed at learning more about the types of programmes being offered at NCB, in addition to a mutual sharing of the Islamic approach in the treatment of drug abuse.

There was a briefing session conducted by NCB officers on the various methods of rehabilitation at the Supervision Unit and the Al-Islah Centre, after which both sides engaged in a dialogue session.
