Around 30kg of rubbish and debris were collected, most of it being plastic accumulated on the shore during a cleaning campaign at Sungai Liang Beach yesterday, as part of a programme titled ‘Earth Tribe Tide Turner Plastic Challenge’.
Over 40 scout members from the Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association (PPNBD) participated.
Held to mark World Environment Day which falls annually on June 5, the campaign was officiated by Scout Chief Commissioner Haji Badar bin Haji Ali, who was accompanied by
Deputy Scout Chief Commissioner Junaidi bin Haji Hussin.
The PPNBD Chief Commissioner said the beach clean-up was also intended to educate the public on the various methods of maintaining cleanliness.
“As scout members, we must take the initiative of not only cleaning up, but also teach and raise awareness, which will help shape the surrounding environment and the residential community towards a greener future,” he added.
The group also planted seedlings along the beach front.
The campaign is one of the three environmental activities conducted by the PPNBD, with the other two being the ‘Champions for Nature Challenge’ and ‘Scouts Go Solar’. The former was held as a tree-planting event at Kampong Sungai Mau, Belait District earlier this month, while the latter is scheduled to take place in the near future as a beneficial activity for the community.
