THIS year’s Knowledge Convention will focus on the role and impact of technological advancements in communications in nation’s development and as a networking facilitator for the society and the country.

Held annually to coincide with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s birthday celebrations, the Knowledge Convention 2016 will be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas from August 23-25, 2016.

This was revealed during a press conference chaired jointly by Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications (MinCom) and Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid, Permanent Secretary (Law and Welfare) at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) yesterday.

Carrying the theme ‘Menjana Perhubungan Berkat dan Selamat Pemangin Kesejahteraan Ummah’, or loosely translated as ‘Creating Sanctified and Safe Communications as a Catalyst for Community Harmonisation’, the convention is expected to be launched by His Majesty.

The three-day event will see among others special and keynote lectures, a main forum and a symposium.

On August 23 during the launching, the State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned will deliver a special lecture and an invited speaker from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) will present another a keynote lecture entitled ‘The Link of Sanctified Communications with Community Harmony’ the following day.

The main forum on August 25 will see discussions by a panel of local and international speakers on the topic of the impact of communications on community harmony.

Meanwhile, every afternoon from August 23-25, there will be a symposium which will feature some 17 working papers from 16 speakers, broken down into six sessions and a further six minor themes.

Those invited to the symposium include civil servants, students from higher learning institutions as well as representatives from the ICT and transportation fields in the private sector.

The full programme of the convention can be accessed through www.majlisilmu.gov.bn and a QR code can be scanned through the website for the programme to be viewed on mobile devices.

An innovative aspect of the forum will be the availability of the ‘Pigeon Hole’ application that will enable spectators to relay questions to speakers online through symposium moderators.

Jointly hosted by PMO and MinCom this year, the Knowledge Convention 2016 will help paint the real picture of the role of communications in the development and wellbeing of the community, due to the fact that the issue is often ignored and left unexplored, said Haji Azhar.

Apart from this, he said this year’s convention also aims to expand the true definition of communications in the transportation and ICT fields and its impact to civilisation as a facilitator in the ecosystem that can generate opportunities, economic resilience and commercial space as well as a catalyst for the enhancement of standard of living.
