THE Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) carried out an ‘illegal racing prevention operation’ last Friday to ensure public safety, especially to road users. The operation was carried out at the Tanah Jambu main road and the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium area. The operation involved officers and personnel of the Brunei-Muara District Police.
From the operation, two vehicles were detained for not having valid road tax while one driver did not possess a valid driving licence. Another three vehicles were detained for installing modifications without clearance from the authorities.
Illegal racing prevention operations will be actively carried out to ensure that roads are safe, free from abuse, and disturbance to residents who live nearby illegal racing locations.
The RBPF advises car owners to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and free from modifications unauthorised by the authorities. Those involved in illegal street racing are advised to stop their activities immediately as action will be taken upon those who fail to adhere to the warning.
Those involved in illegal racing activities will be punished under section 47A (7) Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68, and face a minimum fine of $1,000 and maximum $2,000, six months of imprisonment and suspension of their driving licence.
Drivers caught speeding at maximum speed may be charged under Section 24 of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68 and a fine of $2,000. They may also be charged under Section 28 (1) Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68, for driving dangerously and will face a fine of $10,000 or two years imprisonment.
Those who have made unauthorised modifications will be given a compound charge under the Road Traffic Regulations, Chapter 68.
