Call to cultivate road safety habits

Road safety needs total attention while follow-up is essential because the nation’s goal is to protect lives of all road users and to create a safe road environment, Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Iswandy bin Ahmad, in his capacity as the Ambassador of National Road Safety Council (MKKJR) said.

“Statistics and strategies as well as activities have been implemented by the authorities to address issues related to road safety such as accidents, mistakes frequently committed by road users, correct driving habits such as ensuring the vehicle is in a good condition, wearing seatbelts while driving, not exceeding the speed limit and others. Suggestions to improve road habits is important to prevent from losing lives which has seen an increase and to avoid incidents,” he said.

Yang Berhormat Iswandy made these comments during a press conference held by the MKKJR yesterday to review road accidents for the mid-year and offences’ statistics for the year 2020.

He also emphasised the need to inculcate a sense of responsibility among the road users in contributing to the road safety of all.

It was held at the Amar Pahlawan Hall of the Ministry of Transport and Info-communications (MTIC).

Permanent Secretary at the MTIC Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Land Transport Department (JPD) Director Haji Rozaly bin Haji Saidon, and Royal Brunei Police Force’s (RBPF) Traffic Control and Investigation Department (JSKLL) Acting Director Senior Superintendent of Police Pengiran Haji Abdul Salam bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Ghani were also present.

Haji Mohammad Nazri shared MTIC’s efforts towards on safe driving and raising awareness on road safety.

According to him, the Media and Dissemination Action Group continues to improve and enhance the road safety culture through various means including mass media such as television and radio, social media, government counters, websites and through Road Safety Pledging which have reached 10,760 since its launch on December 1, 2018.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, special topics on road safety were included in the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) subject for all students from Years 1 to 10 in all public schools. Competitions like the Peraduan Pembuatan Video Keselamatan Jalan Raya and a Storyboard Writing Competition for a road safety game will commence early September.

He also touched on the launch of the pilot project for speed warning device.

MKKJR also called on the public to cultivate road safety habits.

“Respect your own life and the lives of others and always remember that the best gift for our family is to reach our destination safely,” Iswandy said.
