LOOKING to forge research collaboration on renewable energy, Director-General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri yesterday invited Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) to become a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW).

Dr Abdulaziz extended this invitation during his visit to UTB to explore potential collaboration opportunities in academic and research fields.

Upon arrival at the university, the ISESCO Director-General was welcomed by Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research) of UTB Professor Dr Zuruzi Abu Samah, principal officers and academic staff of UTB.

During the meeting, Dr Abdulaziz listened to a presentation on the academic programmes offered at UTB as well as the research activities, especially on renewable energy, carried out at the university.

“I just heard of the works done by UTB and this has opened the horizon of possible collaborations between ISESCO, its scientific directors as well as colleges and schools and UTB,” Dr Abdulaziz said after the presentation.

“Established in 1982, ISESCO has accomplished many projects in the fields of science and technology, education and culture. We have developed various strategies for developing science and innovation.

“We have created the Centre for Promotion of Scientific Research and the Supreme Council for Education, Science and Culture to implement these strategies,” he pointed out.

“I am impressed with the UTB professors who come from various countries and possess many different experiences. Insya Allah, we will work with UTB through the Ministry of Education. The ministry could help UTB join the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. The process is very easy and we welcome UTB to join us,” he added.

Currently, Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali are members of FUIW.

Concluding his address, Dr Abdulaziz said, “It’s important to maintain our research works on renewable energy like solar, wind and biomass energy. Islamic world is full of these components.

“Oil is not everlasting and when it ends, we will find it hard to power our cities.

“We need to concentrate on renewable energy because it is the future. I encourage the professors here to further increase their research on renewable energy.”

Brunei praised as iconic nation for Muslim world

HIGHLY impressed with how Islam deeply influences and broadly integrates the socio-political life of the people in Brunei Darussalam and how diligently the country follows the teachings of Islam in its process of development and modernisation, the head of Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has hailed the Sultanate as a role model for the Muslim world.

“In Brunei Darussalam, the true teachings of Islam and Islamic way of life are strongly integrated, not only in religious aspects but also in socio-economic and socio-political spheres,” said Director-General of the ISESCO Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri in an interview with the local media at The Empire Hotel & Country Club on Wednesday.

“With Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) named as the ‘Capital City of Islamic Culture for Asia’ in 2019 as well as the ASEAN City of Culture (2016-2018), it would be an interesting time to highlight the uniqueness of Brunei before the Islamic world,” he added.

During his visit to Brunei, he said he had the honour to meet His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and was fortunate to listen to the monarch’s advice and thoughts about joint Islamic work.

“I also had the honour of presenting His Majesty the Golden Medal of ISESCO as an appreciation towards the support that it receives from Brunei and the role His Majesty plays in Islamic joint actions at the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) platforms. “I also had a wonderful meeting with His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office during which we discussed the relationship between ISESCO and Brunei Darussalam,” Dr Abdulaziz said.

He also highlighted the significance of the celebration of Bandar Seri Begawan as the Islamic Culture Capital next year, saying that it would help to highlight to the world the influence of Islam on the culture and civilisation of the Brunei and its people and how the nation’s leadership under His Majesty was able to make strong progress in various aspects based on Islamic teaching.

During his meeting with Minister of Education Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman on Tuesday, Dr Abdulaziz highlighted the strong relationship between ISESCO and Brunei Darussalam, through the Ministry of Education.

He said, their discussions focussed on potential areas of cooperation to be explored between ISESCO and Brunei Darussalam in science and technology, Halal industry, renewable energy and 21st Century education focussing on school leaders and quality teachers.

“I also had a fruitful meeting with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, besides visiting Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and also the Royal Regalia Museum,” he added.

“These visits have given me a broad idea about the past and present of this great country and I would use these experiences to strengthen and expand the scope of our cooperation and partnership in the field education, science, culture and communication.”

Yesterday, Dr Abdulaziz also visited Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).
Dr Abdulaziz said ISESCO is looking forward to undertake more joint works with Brunei Darussalam in myriad of areas including renewable energy, capacity building, teaching Arabic as second language, training of teachers, curriculum development as well as science and technology and environment.

Asked what attributes Bandar Seri Begawan hold to be the Islamic Culture Capital for Asia, Dr Abdulaziz said Brunei has strong credentials to receive the status.

“For one, Brunei has a rich reservoir of legacy as an Islamic country. Adding to it is today’s reality that the country is progressing and developing very fast in different aspects of life – science and technology, education, culture, infrastructure including development of centres of excellence – all have contributed towards its eligibility as the Islamic Culture Capital,” he noted.

“What is also making Brunei distinctive is the adherence of its people to Islamic morality which reflects their strong belief in Islamic teachings. I am also highly impressed by the cleanliness of the city (BSB). It is one of the cleanest cities in the world.

“This shows how strong an importance people of Brunei Darussalam are giving to cleanliness, which is one of the teachings of Islam … I think Brunei shows an example to the world, specifically to the Islamic world, how a nation that believes in the true teachings of Islam can practise it perfectly – not by just saying it, but also doing it,” he added.

Dr Abdulaziz outlined some of the features that will benefit the country as the Islamic Culture Capital for Asia.

He said ISESCO will be implementing and participating in many activities and member states will hold cultural weeks in Brunei as it did it in the past Islamic Culture Capital.

“The year will be full of activities, not only cultural, but also scientific and educational, and Brunei is expected to receive many visitors from other member states. Brunei will also be featured extensively at the ISESCO headquarters. These activities will also help the country’s tourism industry,” he said.
The Islamic Culture Capital status is given to three countries, representing Arab, Asian and African regions, every year.

In 2019, Brunei will join Al-Quds (State of Palestine), Tunis (Republic of Tunisia) – as an exception as the fourth Islamic Culture Capital for 2019 to mark the occasion of its hosting the 11th Islamic Conference of Culture Ministers – and Bissau (Republic of Guinea Bissau) as Islamic culture capitals.

This year, the Islamic Culture capitals are Al Muharraq (Kingdom of Bahrain), Nakhchivan (Republic of Azerbaijan) and Libreville (Republic of Gabon).

BRUNEI emerged champions of the His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei’s 72nd Birthday Polo Tournament after defeating Singapore 9-7 in a keenly contested final at the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club yesterday.

Brunei, spearheaded by His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah, maintained their perfect record having enjoyed victories against Pakistan and Malaysia in group stage play.

The early periods of the match witnessed nothing to choose from as both teams fought hard in their attempt to win the title.

The hosts gained a slight advantage in the fourth chukka after leading 6-4 but Singapore were breathing down their necks.

In the next chukka, the advantage was not lost as Brunei led 7-5 but the next point made it more interesting in the late stages of the match.

Brunei’s Gaston Urturi made a move to ensure that his side not only widened their lead but also assured that time did not favour Singapore to mount a late comeback.

Gaston, who has terrorised all the teams since day one with his all-around play, knocked the ball from the side of the field into the centre to present his side a two-goal advantage.

He made another strong move on the other end to put his side in dreamland and another goal from Singapore proved to be mere consolation.

Singapore settled for a runners-up finish while the Philippines are placed third. Malaysia finished in fourth place while Pakistan took fifth place.

STATE Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned recently gave a prime address to the participants of an intensive course for the presentation of Khutbah (sermon), emphasising the proper and efficient method of delivery that is obligatory to the Friday prayer service.

“There are specific techniques in the presentation of Khutbah that are aimed at the congregants attending Friday prayers,” he explained. “This way, the contents of Khutbah should be more attractive to the congregants.

“The message of Khutbah must be clear and focussed on its intent, so that it will be fully understood by those in attendance at the Friday prayers.”

The State Mufti said in order to present Khutbah in a more efficient manner, Khatib must be well-informed on the issues about to be delivered to the masses.

He also cited Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as a role model, who understood the concept of a meaningful and well-presented Friday sermon.

“Some Khatibs tend to sound tense, with their voices pitched quite high from the beginning of the sermon to the end,” said the State Mufti. “This was not Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)’s practice when delivering the Friday sermon.

Khatibs must fully understand the basics of reading the holy verses of Al-Quran and the contents of the Hadith, and to present them in a comprehensible manner which can be heard and understand by the Friday congregants.”

The State Mufti then elaborated on the rules of etiquette for both the obligatory and Friday prayers.

“These prayers must be done correctly, in accordance to the Islamic rules that regulate them,” he said. “The congregants following the Imam’s lead must be positioned correctly, according to the requirements. All of these rules are the responsibility of every individual and every congregant, which must be adhered to.”

Held at Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), the course involved the refinement of prayers in adherence to the principles of Mazhab Shafi’e which form the basis of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) and the Brunei Constitution, while enhancing the institution of the mosque as a place of Islamic education.

A NUMBER of Bruneian football fans are having a ball of a time in Russia, refusing to be armchair critics watching the FIFA World Cup 2018 matches in the comfort of their homes.

For most of them, watching the game live at the stadium is a dream come true.

Some of the lucky few shared with the Weekend Bulletin their utmost joy for being able to attend the once-in-four year football extravaganza; they all seemed to be overwhelmed by the warmth of the host country.

“I feel like the luckiest person in the world at this time. Russia is the largest country to host the World Cup and this gives a unique touch to the festival,” said Khairul Bahri Jomari Khairul, a hardcore Bruneian football fan who is lucky enough to be studying in Russia.

Others travelled more than 6,000 kilometres just to watch the games.

“I am at loss of words to fully express what I have experienced in Russia. It’s like a dream come true to be here in Russia to witness the World Cup.

“I believe everyone here with me shares the same feeling,” said Pengiran Mohd Syahreen bin Pengiran Haji Metassan, a blogger.

“We didn’t expect that the Russian people are this welcoming, despite the language barrier because most Russians can’t speak English.

“They’re amazing people. If you are lost somewhere and ask for direction, they will guide you properly. Halal food is also easy to find here,” he added elatedly.
