TOP ranked Japanese professional badminton player, Sho Sasaki believed that Brunei Darussalam has the potential to produce high quality badminton player to compete in the international stage.

Sho Sasaki, who is on a visit in the country for the Brunei-Japan Badminton Exchange is ranked 24 in singles and is the highest-ranked Japanese badminton player in the world.

In an interview with the Bulletin yesterday, Sho Sasaki said, “To be a champion, there is no shortcut. It is important to take one step at a time to progress and don’t be discouraged after a defeat because it is vital for an athlete to be able to overcome defeat and move on to improve for the next match.”

On Monday, the Japanese badminton team also visited Brunei’s Sports School and had a few practice sessions with the students.

He said, “I am impressed with the badminton players in the school. The students were playing hard and managed to put up good matches.”

Sho Sasaki who is looking to retire from professional badminton and looking to venture into coaching also stressed on the importance of setting a goal as well as having the right approach to achieve the goal with one’s own style of play.

When asked if Brunei has the potential of producing quality player like himself, Sasaki said, “Yes, there is a possibility for Brunei as there are many talented badminton players here.”

At 34 years old, Sasaki will not be competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games. He felt that the time is right for him to retire to pursue a coaching career to help increase young badminton players.

The Japanese badminton team comprising Sho Sasaki (ranked 24 in singles), Yu Igarashi (ranked 302 in singles), Kenya Mitsuhashi (ranked 1121 in singles and 95 in doubles), along with Miyuki Kato and Miki Kashihara (ranked 276 in doubles) yesterday visited Jerudong International School (JIS).

The Japanese badminton players joined in the coaching session of badminton with the GCSE PE Group and the CCA Badminton group whereby they also play parring match with a number of students.

The visiting professional players also gave a number of tips to the students on the approach of smashing, drop shots as well as serving during the one-hour session.

According to Barnaby Sandow, “I am really excited to see the expression on the children’s face when they witnessed the high level of performance being displayed by the professional Japanese badminton players. I hope that the children will be inspired to strive for improvement in badminton with the coaching session.

“Although we don’t speak the same language (Japanese and English), the players can communicate through the game of badminton and build on the relationship.”

Meanwhile Jaspar Yu, Brunei national badminton player who was also present on the sideline of the session said, “Brunei is yet to be exposed to the high level of badminton game therefore this is a great and rare opportunity for Bruneian to really grasp and witness the high level of badminton game that the Japanese team bring to the country.

“I hope that the Japanese badminton players can inspire our local players to strive for excellence.”

BRUNEI Darussalam coach Mohamad Fadzli bin Haji Masri expressed his hopes that the local shuttlers could benefit from the exposure and experience of competing against world ranked players during the Brunei-Japan Badminton Exchange held to commemorate the 70th Birthday Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the Indoor Stadium last night.

The coach explained that lack of experience and nervousness of competing attributed to their downfall but is hopeful that the exposure of playing against quality players could help gain experience and increase their mental strength.

“The mental aspect of the individual when playing in a competitive tournament compared with training is not the same,” the coach said in an interview with the media after the conclusion of day one of the programme.

“So they will become nervous and they could not play properly,” he said.

Mohamad Fadzli admitted that the women’ doubles of Siti Nurhayati Jefri and Siti Marinah Mohd Salleh were not their usual selves after they were comprehensively beaten 21-5 21-8 by Japanese pair Miyuki Kato and Miki Kashihara.

The coach added that the Bruneian female duo only got to assert their influence in the second set.

However, the losses have given the players a wake-up call to identify their weaknesses mainly in improving their stamina.

The Brunei male pairing of Masrur Fuad Haji Asmat and Md Shahirul Md Jenin came up with a strong competitive spirit after pushing the Japanese pair of Yu Igarashi and Kenya Mitsuhashi all the way before succumbing 25-23 in the first set before the latter completed a straight-set win.

The coach said that wind assisted the Bruneian duo on their side of the court during the first set.

Meanwhile in the first game, Brunei’s Olympian Jaspar Yu Woon Chai was defeated in straight sets by Japanese world number 24 Sho Sasaki.

The practice matches resume today with Syazani Aiman facing a yet-to-be determined Japanese player and the coach said that the players involved especially Noornekma Rainah Haji Roshin and Amalina Aliah Haji Gapor will seek pointers how to play against them.

PROGRESIF Cellular Sdn Bhd yesterday invited the media to a ‘Coffee and Chat’ session with Progresif and Itsybytes Company at Starbucks, Beribi, to speak about the telecom firm’s latest brochure which utilised augmented reality technology developed by Itsybytes.

Representing Progresif at the event were Devin Edwards, Chief Marketing Officer and Roger Plahay, Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Progresif, while Itsybytes was represented by Ikmalina Yunos, Founder and Chief Executive Officer and Huda Firdaus Jamil, Chief Creative Officer.

In his talk, Devin said that apart from developments in telecommunications, Progresif is also active in promoting its brand, building a sense of community and exploring Brunei’s progressive eco-system through the relationships they foster with people who are doing things in the market that no one has done before, and yet not well-promoted.

“One of the fundamental pillars of our corporate social responsibility is to raise awareness of these individuals, businesses and entrepreneurs who are doing things that we feel are progressive, and tie them to what they try to promote as a brand,” said Devin.

The Progresif brochure, Devin said, acts as a platform for these businesses or entrepreneurs to promote themselves, with the likes of a high school student who delves in Minecraft development, which Progresif partnered with to build the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Minecraft that can be seen in the latest brochure, and Itsybytes, which has helped in a relatively large project with Progresif to create the first augmented reality-enhanced magazine for Brunei.

“We see this as a tool now, partially capitalising on the awareness that Pokemon Go has brought to augmented reality.”

As a company also involved in promoting the creative industry, Itsybytes actively develops game applications, animations and programming with the aim of providing enjoyment for the locals through their contents. Their application ‘kARya’ (‘art’ in Malay), which implements the augmented reality technology, can be used to scan the content of the Progresif brochure.

Devin added that the brochure is a big success as it is a starting point for growing awareness on what is progressive in Brunei, acting as a first real case study of putting something together that can be commercialised and can change the media landscape, or even changing the virtual reality landscape of Brunei.

Meanwhile, Ikmalina explained that as the first game studio in Brunei, Itsybytes is trying to bring game development into Brunei to revolutionise entertainment, bring joy to its people as well as increase local youth’s awareness of such technology, which will in turn help achieve both Brunei’s Vision 2035 and the vision of a ‘Smart Nation Society’.

“We have been developing augmented reality and virtual reality for a while now… We try not to limit ourselves to just developing games, because we really want Brunei to experience better technology,” said the CEO of Itsybytes. She added that they have been focussing more on augmented reality content for organisations, especially those requiring help in maximising their advertisements.

GHANIM International Corporation Sdn Bhd and the Ministry of Health yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and launched a ‘Read the Label’ campaign.

The MoU between the two parties will see them jointly working together to promote a healthy lifestyle in Brunei Darussalam through campaigns and programmes aimed at raising awareness on healthy lifestyle eating habits and lifestyle practices.

Signing on behalf of Ghanim International Corporation was its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nur Rahman, while the Ministry of Health was represented by Dr Hajah Maslina binti Haji Mohsin, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the Ministry of Health.

Witnessing the signing ceremony were Ghanim International Corporation Chairman and Deputy Minister of Finance Dato Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Haji Zakaria bin Haji Serudin. The ceremony was also attended by senior government officials from the Ministry of Health.

Both parties also launched the ‘Read the Label’ campaign which showcased a video promoting the act of reading food labels towards choosing healthier food options so that consumers are attentive of the nutritional information at the back in their food purchases.

Both sides stated the collaboration between them has been in ongoing discussion for some time, where Ghanim and Ministry of Health together are aligned in the aspirations to shift the greater public’s health education and overall wellbeing from a hand-to-mouth experience to one that is also educational, practical and beneficial in terms of food consumption.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ghanim CEO Dr Nur Rahman said in a speech, “Many countries around the world and the World Health Organization have initiated a programme to encourage reduction of salt, sugar and fat as a preventive measure to reduce non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes.

“Ghanim has been working to ensure that the products taken on board under the bruneihalalfoods brand add value to the lives of those who consume them with the aspirations that other manufacturers and food vendors will follow suit towards aligning with the ‘Read the Label’ initiative as part of their commercial and social responsibilities,” he added.

“We have strived to source food products with reduced fat, salt and/or sugar without compromising taste profile. It is a goal that is both challenging and exciting for us.

“The healthier product options included reduced sodium salt (Nutrisal), sugar replacement (Provia), low fat creamer (Cremvia), cordials having 50 per cent reduction in sugar or no added sugar and low fat value added chicken products are currently available at retail outlets in Brunei.

“Customer responses are promising. It means people are ready to have their lives transformed for the better. That also means that they get to enjoy what they eat without concern,” he said.

He noted that since the start of discussions nearly a year ago, Ghanim and the Health Promotion Centre (HPC) have collaborated on a number of activities, including an awareness initiative on sugar, a ‘Healthy Portion Campaign’ during Ramadhan, a ‘Sugarless Syawal Campaign’ and the ‘Hua Ho Health Week.’

“At the heart of this success is HPC’s drive, as an influential organisation in the country, to have the necessary plans and structure in place that also serves as an opportunity to further our commercial and social responsibilities.”

He described the newly launched Read the Label campaign as an initiative that “not only solidifies HPC as an institution that has the greater public’s health education and overall well-being in mind; it is an institution that seeks to go to greater heights on the shift of food and beverage consumption to more than just a hand-to-mouth experience.”

“Consumers will find that bruneihalalfoods products will be readable in terms of its benefits and value-add through a system that is in line with HPC’s aspirations. There is no doubt that HPC is poised to lead this and various other initiatives to come that are undoubtedly educational, practical and beneficial for all,” he said.

A MEMORANDUM of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday between Ghanim International Corporation, Golden Tree Sdn Bhd and Chinese company Pure Fresh International Holdings Limited yesterday at the Design and Technology Building in Anggerek Desa.

The MoU was signed with the intent of integrating the three parties’ competitive advantage for international business development.

Pure Fresh International Holdings Limited is located in the People’s Republic of China, and is the leading O2O (online to offline) fresh product chain platform worldwide which integrates all superior resources from global supply chain in line with the enterprise’s principle of direct supply from global production bases.

Golden Tree Sdn Bhd is headquartered in Brunei Darussalam. It operates diversified industries with multiple in-depth cooperative resources in Southeast Asia.

Ghanim International Corporation Sdn Bhd is a state-owned enterprise located in Brunei Darussalam which develops, markets and promotes high-quality halal food products under the bruneihalalfoods brand with production bases and reliable suppliers across the world.

Signing on behalf of Ghanim International Corporation was its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Nur Rahman, while Golden Tree was represented by CEO Hakim Chen and Yiyan Ou signed on behalf of Pure Fresh International Holdings Limited. Witnessing the signing were Dato Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Finance and Chairman of Ghanim International Corporation; and Yang Jian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam.

In a speech at the event, Ghanim International Corporation’s CEO Dr Nur Rahman said that the MoU signing “highlights the long-standing cooperation and collaboration that has been in discussion between Ghanim International Corporation, Golden Tree and Pure Fresh International Holdings Limited.

“While the relationship between Brunei and China has always been strong, today’s occasion signals the level of strength that can only pave the way for further opportunities in the region and beyond.”

He touched on the global market value of the Halal industry, noting that it makes up 16 per cent of the world whole food industry and has the potential to reach 20 per cent in the world food industry products trade alone.

“This potential is not only a rightful representation of the figures that have driven us to reach in the commercial industry, but also a representation of what Ghanim International Corporation, together with Golden Tree and Pure Fresh International Holdings Limited, will potentially be driving in terms of market development and business promotion.

“Entry into the China market will help lead bruneihalalfoods to integrate with Golden Tree and Pure Fresh International Holdings Limited its capabilities in the areas of research and development, sourcing, marketing, distribution and many others,” he said.

“This MoU is not only indicative of the strategic cooperation that has long been in deliberation between China and Brunei at the government and commercial levels, it will further set out the actions that will be taken between Ghanim and its partners to take Brunei products and services in line with its aspirations for export-readiness, thereby tapping into a large portion of the market potential.

“Overall, the Chinese and the Halal market in China are areas that have great potential to be tapped into and Ghanim, Golden Tree and Pure Fresh International Holdings are poised to make bids to together work for the same project, co-operating for the benefit of the supply chain which will in turn spur the establishment of a global direct sourcing network.

“Where China is vastly experienced in this area and abundant in resources and opportunities, Brunei, vis-à-vis Ghanim International Corporation, can stand to benefit with a great outcome of together producing, marketing and promoting high-quality halal food products under the bruneihalalfoods brand with production bases and reliable suppliers around the world.

“We are confident that Golden Tree and Pure Fresh International Holdings Limited are rightfully endowed to together hold our hands in this endeavour.”

Collaboration with Pure Fresh and Golden Tree an important step for Ghanim into China market

THE Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Ghanim International Corporation, Golden Tree Sdn Bhd and Pure Fresh International Holdings marks “the start of a very exciting collaboration” and presents Ghanim with an important first step into the Chinese market.

Dato Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Chairman of Ghanim International Corporation said this while speaking to reporters yesterday on the sidelines of the signing ceremony.

“This is the start of a very exciting collaboration, especially with this opportunity to work with Pure Fresh and Golden Tree. This will allow us to have a first step into the Chinese market, which is a very big market.”

He noted that Pure Fresh themselves have quite a number of supermarkets in China, in cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Foshan. “This will give our products good exposure in a number of cities immediately.”

“Hopefully, by working with them, we will be able to promote our bruneihalalfoods brand in China.”

He explained that there are multiple objectives.

“First is of course to sell whatever existing products we have to the Chinese market. Secondly is to understand the market better; the potential and other products that we can also supply to them.

Dato Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Chairman of Ghanim International Corporation speaking to the media yesterday. - DANIAL NORJIDI

“We may not have all the products at the moment, but to understand the market better will allow us to work with the local small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to get them to hopefully produce products that will suit the Chinese market.

“Also, we want to encourage Pure Fresh and Golden Tree to continue to work with us to share information with us so that we can better improve our products and widen our range for the Chinese market.”

He explained yesterday, “The intention is not just for us to provide our product to them and for them to sell, but this collaboration will also allow us to understand the Chinese market better in terms of the other product requirements.”

This, he said, is so that when they have this feedback, they can work with DARE (Darussalam Enterprise) to have access to local SMEs, and subsequently work in collaboration to get the SMEs to produce more products.

Explaining the reasoning behind the choice of partners, he said, “Like any commercial product, supply chain is very important, so you want to sell to someone who already has the distribution network, the outlets that reach out to the local population.

“We looked at Pure Fresh because they already have existing supermarkets in the various big cities. China is a big market. You cannot straight away try to reach out to every part of China – you need to do it a step at a time.

“This small step will allow us to understand the market better, to understand their requirements, preferences and appetite for this type of product, so that it allows us time to readjust our product to better suit their market before we go even bigger and to other parts of China.”

On whether Ghanim can meet demand in the China market, he said, “If the demand is there, we will be there to try to meet the demand. Of course, at the moment, it’s the first time we go into China. We need to know the market better. This partnership will allow us know the market better.”

“Pure Fresh and Golden Tree will give us feedback from time to time, and it is very important that we work closely together so that we understand the market and continue to refine our product to be more suitable to the Chinese market. Then we will continue to expand and work with the SMEs to try to increase the production and export.

“I hope this collaboration will be successful in the long term and that we will be able to expand into the Chinese market.”

He added that Ghanim is also looking at other markets beyond China – particularly Asean members countries.

DPMM FC’s nine-game undefeated run came to a screeching halt following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Balestier Khalsa in their final game of the 2016 S League season at the Toa Payoh Stadium in Singapore last night.

The Brunei-based outfit finished 2nd runners-up which was instrumentally helped by a late resurgence having at one stage found to be under serious competition for the position.

DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean started with three players that were involved in the AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers with Yura Indera Putera declared fit to start the match having been a doubt at the start of the week.

Fadhil Noh produced a cross which was headed wide by Niko Tokic before Hazzuwan Halim delivered a fine ball but Tokic could not convert in a matter of minutes.

Hazzuwan’s passing accuracy meant Tokic was not at a shortage in service who could not put the ball past Wardun Yussof who after sensing danger was out of his line.

DPMM FC tried to make it happen with Hendra Azam sending a good cross for Azwan Ali Rahman who knocked the ball down with his chest towards Rafael Ramazotti who blasted the ball wide.

The hosts became the first side who tested the opponents’ mettle but Miroslav Kristic struck a shot towards the goalkeeper after Tokic had done well to knock down a cross.

The Tigers had come knocking the door and finally broke DPMM FC’s resistance as Tokic tapped the ball home from a Hazzuwan’s low cross.

Kristic collected Daniel Farhan’s cross before firing past Wardun to ensure the victory in the final minute of normal time.

THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) and Civil Service Institute (IPA) yesterday organised its first joint seminar titled ‘Public Officers’ Law Seminar: Understanding the Law 2016’ at the Pencapaian Hall of IPA in Rimba, Gadong.

The guest of honour was the Attorney General, Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati binti Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Salleh.

The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by welcoming remarks by the Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Solicitor General Dato Paduka Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji A Rashid.

He said the event was one of the many sharing platforms where the AGC will be showcasing to the public the service and legal aspects in dealing with the day-to-day duties and obligations in establishing the essential logistical foresight in moving ahead with the times.

He added that ‘moving ahead with the times’ is a phrase that has implied connotations that challenges posed will also be great and it is the duty of the public officers to stay updated with variables and factors, not only within their scope of jurisdiction, but also taking into account that of others, which may have an impact on the outcome of their desired policies.

“Characteristically, (it is the ability) to be able to anticipate, and be ready with contingency plans that are viable, if the situation calls for such measures to be taken. This process is one of the key components in attaining the best possible outcome for any government-driven initiatives, and so shall it be the expected norm in the standard of services, as far as ‘deliverables’ are concerned,” the Solicitor General said.

“I am reasonably expecting all participants of the seminar, to come to a realisation that by the end of the seminar, they will be able adopt such knowledge and affirmations to effectively perform their duties, while being made aware, more than ever, of their legal responsibilities and the extent to which that ensues, in as far as promoting confidence and trust of the general public,” he added.

The two-day seminar saw 13 senior officers from the AGC delivering papers in their area of specialisation where among the papers presented were on constitutional matters which provided the basis of governance in general, including the authority to create, amend and repeal laws within the framework of legislation.

Also presented were the aspects of international relations with regard to international treaties and obligations, the essential concept of the Criminal Justice System in having to bring criminal cases to court and the due processes that it may entail, the numerous aspects necessitating Civil Litigation and the possible utilisation of recognised alternative dispute resolutions as supplementary avenues for civil redress amongst others.

The seminar is yet another initiative by the AGC with the main objective to introduce the public of?cers to the general legal principles which they are likely to encounter in the course of their day-to-day work and to ensure that they function within the bounds of the law in order to promote an effective performance of their duties in public services.

At the same time, it also provided an opportunity to forge closer ties between the AGC and 70 government officers from the respective government agencies attending the event, who are also dealing with matters involving law-making, contract management or international treaties or matters dealing with enforcement.

The highlight of the seminar was the launching of the publication ‘Musings from Chambers: Chambers Decoded’ featuring a collection of articles from senior of?cers on their personal experiences and challenges in the AGC where the publication is yet another initiative of the AGC to give readers a glimpse of the Chambers’ function.

BRUNEI Darussalam will be producing natural Astaxanthin, a highly valuable nutraceutical ingredient from the cultivation of microalgae following the launch of MC Biotech Sdn Bhd, the first commercial biotechnology facility in the country.

The move will contribute to the diversification of economy and create employment for locals.

With an investment of BND20 million, MC Biotech – a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation and Nissui – was officially launched by Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday afternoon.

Located at the Bio-Innovation Corridor in Kampong Tungku, MC Biotech is expected to produce 18 metric tonnes of the biomass annually to be exported to Japan for final processing.

Plans are in the pipeline to build a final processing plant besides MC Biotech in order to produce the finished products locally.

Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office launching MC Biotech Sdn Bhd, the first commercial biotechnology facility in the country, while Yuki Kaneda, the Executive Director of MC Biotech Sdn Bhd, looks on.

Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin said, “Today, we witness another significant milestone with the opening of MC Biotech and the ‘Sinar Suria Bio Center’ located here at the Bio-Innovation Corridor, an industrial park geared to attract halal and bio-industry related investments.

“This marks Brunei Darussalam’s first steps towards embracing developments in industrial biotechnology. The opportunity it presents to Brunei Darussalam is that it allows us to tap into our target industries in new, sustainable ways. We hope that the Bio-Innovation Corridor will grow in the coming years for a vibrant bio-industry to flourish.”

On tapping into the global Halal market, the minister said, “I understand that at present, MC Biotech is still in the process of researching and developing an alternative production process in order to comply with these standards. As such, MC Biotech needs to closely work with the relevant government agencies to achieve this aim.”

Citing to a Thomas Reuters report, he said, “The value of the global Halal pharmaceuticals sector is worth US$72 billion. Hence, the opportunities are endless in this sector. Brunei Darussalam wants to emerge as a leading Halal pharmaceutical producer and exporter in Asean and eventually worldwide. With the Brunei Halal certification and branding, we can do so much more. Here I strongly suggest for MC Biotech to work with Simpor Pharma, Brunei’s first pharmaceutical plant, to find opportunities that would result in the export of Halal pharmaceutical and health supplements worldwide from Brunei Darussalam.”

MC Biotech, the minister said, “is the pioneer in the cultivation of micro-algae for the extraction of Astaxanthin in Brunei Darussalam. Astaxanthin is not only known for its wide use as a natural food-dye, but also for its antioxidant and clear health benefits.”

In 2014, the global market value for Astaxanthin was estimated at $447 million US dollars and is expected to grow rapidly to $1.1 billion US dollars by 2020, he said. “There are certainly great opportunities here for MC Biotech to tap into this growth.”

On attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), the minister said, “What we really need are FDIs, which are able to create value-added products and services in Brunei Darussalam, and to collaborate together with the government agencies and local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). We invite FDIs from across the supply chain to allow the development of robust in-country value chains and industrial ecosystems. We need FDIs to be able to work further downstream to ensure that most of the bioprocessing is carried out in Brunei Darussalam. This can, in turn, create and generate capital, spin-offs in the local market, employment opportunities, and ultimately, diversify and boost the Brunei economy.”

Yuki Kaneda, the Executive Director of MC Biotech Sdn Bhd, said, “Mitsubishi Corporation’s involvement in the project stems from our long experience and presence in Brunei since 1960s with a wish to expand into more diversified industries particularly in the Life Science industry in line with the Brunei Government’s desire.”

MC Biotech Sdn Bhd, he said, is “our first role and mission is to produce natural Astaxanthin from the cultivation of microalgae. Astaxanthin is a natural occurring red pigment; rich in antioxidants those are beneficial in antiageing for human being. It is a highly valuable nutraceutical ingredient often used as a key ingredient for health beverages, healthcare supplements and cosmetic products.”

He said he hoped that MC Biotech can be a pioneer in biotechnology and life science industry in Brunei to pave the way into related downstream opportunities, creating employment, training as well as research and eventually tapping into the global Halal market.
