The second component of the exhibition, ‘Strategic Partnerships’, represents a major facet of UTB’s collaboration with several industries in terms of curriculum development, internship placement, knowledge transfer and community activities.

Among UTB’s strategic partners in the showcase were Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd, Puper Aircraft Inc, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Amec Foster Wheeler and BIBD At-Tamwil. The Crown Prince CIPTA Award, which is organised by UTB, was also on display in the exhibit.

The third component of the exhibition, ‘360 Graduate’, is also another major facet of UTB, which seeks to produce well-rounded graduates with strong MIB values through sporting, religious and community-based activities. The exhibit showcases several projects undertaken by students, demonstrating their ability to apply their knowledge, skills and abilities in different settings.

A side-feature of this particular exhibit depicts the university’s efforts to sustain and boost interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among school students through the ‘School Adoption Programme’.

His Royal Highness signed a plaque commemorating the launching of UTB’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition at the UTB Gallery.

After the tour of the exhibition, His Royal Highness posed for a group photograph with student representatives, and received a pesambah from the UTB Student Representative Council.

The ‘XLR8 (Experiential Learning Partnership)’ is the theme for UTB’s convocation festival this year, which reflects the university’s mission to provide experiential learning, improve the quality of research and foster key partnerships. The acronym is derived from the phrase ‘experiential (X) learning (LR) partnership (ATE)’, which is also pronounced ‘accelerate’ and signifies the university’s endeavour to ‘accelerate’ efforts to realise its vision to be among the top 10 universities for Engineering and Technology in Southeast Asia by 2018.

Meanwhile, a series of events have been lined up for the festival, including a pop-up career fair, an alumni membership drive and vendors in support of the ‘Bandarku Ceria’ initiative.

The upcoming UTB Convocation 2016 will be held on November 7 at the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre (ICC), in Berakas.

Brunei is most improved global economy: World Bank

BRUNEI Darussalam has been named as the most improved economy in the world for the second year running, according to the Doing Business 2017 Report released by the World Bank on Wednesday.

According to the report, which measures the efficiency and regulation of domestic businesses, Brunei jumped a significant 25 places to 72nd position out of 190 economies worldwide from 97th position last year.

This was highlighted by Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), who is also the Chairman of the Steering Committee of Ease of Doing Business (EODB), at a conference yesterday.

Also present was Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Roselan bin Haji Mohamad Daud, the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, in his capacity as the Deputy Chairman of the committee.

The significant jump in the doing business rankings this year is one of the results of the visionary leadership and constant reminders of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam who had mentioned in his titah during Civil Service Day in November 2015 that “continuous improvements in the ease of doing business ranking is an encouraging achievement in line with the objective of making the country truly pro-businesses as well as a platform for Brunei to be known as an attractive destination for businesses and investors”, Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin said.

It was also made possible by the strong leadership and strategic guidance given by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Chairman of PENGGERAK, who has been proactive and endlessly monitoring the progress, setting ambitious targets and frequently chairing meetings with various ministries to evaluate action plans based on updated data, he added.

This year’s rankings saw Brunei maintain its 4th place among Asean member countries, behind Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

Within the Asia-Pacific region, Brunei Darussalam is placed at 13th, behind north Asian counterparts Republic of Korea, Taiwan and Japan, and ahead of rising Asian powerhouses – China which is ranked at 16 and India at 23.

In the previous report, the Sultanate’s original ranking was 84 which saw an improvement from 105 in 2014, however, the World Bank later introduced some changes to the methodology on some indicators such as on taxes, which has resulted in the readjustment of last year’s overall ranking for all economies, placing Brunei Darussalam significantly lower at 97th place instead of 84th in 2015.

In spite of the downward readjustment of last years’ ranking, Brunei Darussalam’s performance in 2016 remains encouraging, as one of the only 10 economies worldwide that scored improvement across three or more indicators.

The report this year included gender dimension in three out of 10 indicators, namely: Starting a Business, Registering Property and Enforcing Contracts.

The country scored big improvements across six indicators, namely: Getting Electricity, which jumped 55 positions to 21 from 76 in 2015; followed by Resolving Insolvency (57 from 97); Enforcing Contracts (93 from 115); Getting Credit (62 from 78); Protecting Minority Investors (102 from 118); and Paying Taxes (89 from 96).

pg02_161028_bpg02_161028_a

These successes were achieved through the introduction of new processes, regulations and system changes to improve the ease of doing business, particularly geared towards supporting Brunei’s growing number of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the minister said.

“This also includes DARE’s (Darussalam Enterprise) initiative to increase capacity of the MSMEs through the Industry Business Academy, Start-Up Bootcamp and many more other programmes to come. Increased engagement and cooperation of private sector have also made a positive impact, with greater awareness and feedback by the business community, contributing to the governments’ capacity to address ‘on-the-ground’ issues,” he added.

“Another initiative to further assist MSMEs is the Business Support Centre (BSC) which was launched on April 2016 by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. Overseen by DARE, BSC aims to provide SMEs a single venue for getting services offered by 15 government agencies,” the minister said.

“However, there is still lack of awareness of the reforms that we have made and their impact on the ground has been limited. We need to continuously socialise our reforms, have closer engagements with businesses, and put greater emphasis on data to ensure that our reforms are translated into positive improvements on the ground. We also need to keep in mind that the World Bank will not accept reforms straight away; they will continue to monitor the performance and impact of these reforms before,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Roselan said, “PENGGERAK and EODB talk to many businesses to highlight the improvements and ask for their feedback on what else we need to do. We also hold meetings every three weeks to touch on the progress on doing business.”

On this note, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the PMO said. “It (our efforts) must be people-centric and not for particular section of the people. We must continue to work hard together as a team to ensure we continue to improve our performance towards achieving our aim to be among the top 20 in World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking.”

“We will work hard to achieve the top 20, Insya Allah. We are now in the 72nd place. We want the private sector to help us improve our ranking.”

CONCEPTS Computer remain on course of retaining their title following an 83-78 victory over Concepts Technologies to book a spot in the Concepts Veteran Cup final this Sunday at the Brunei Basketball Association Court in Batu Bersurat last night.

Concepts Technologies enjoyed the highest scoring quarter amassing 28 points in the third quarter to narrow the lead by only two points but Concepts Computer found an extra gear and raced to an eight-point lead to solidify their position in the tie.

Ybanez of Concept Technologies downed a trey as scant consolation for the fourth best team in the tournament but the damage had already been done.

Despite running away with the lead at the end, Concepts Computer coach Jameel Mabanto bin Abdullah did not view it as an easy game with the team strengthened by the recruitment of Filipino players.

“We think it was very easy but when we played because they were a lot of Filipinos playing, we can’t say it is very easy,” said Jameel Mabanto in a post-match interview with the Weekend Bulletin.

“It was a little bit hard also because we were also afraid of losing because we went down by one point,” he said.

Having surrendered the first two quarters, Concepts Technologies came into the third quarter with renewed enthusiasm and successfully executing a succession of baskets.

“In the third quarter, they were very aggressive and then they were making three-point shots.”

Jameel Mabanto is pleased with the way his charges have performed since the opening group game as they bid to retain the title they won last year.

Though he acknowledged every member of the playing squad, he also sang the praises of centre player Toledo, Grafil who is crucial in helping to attain the points and Dejesus as well as team manager Vincent Pao in reaching the final.

DPMM FC striker Rafael Ramazotti will be receiving the Top Scorer Award for the second consecutive season in the S League Awards Night at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on November 1.

The Brazilian bagged an impressive tally of 20 goals in the just concluded season and fend off the challenges of the likes of Ken Ilso of Home United and Jonathan Behe of Warriors FC, both of whom had also a prolific season upfront with the latter scoring a hat-trick in the last game.

The club’s target man scored four penalties in the process eventually finishing third in the league despite a late rally of securing a first runners-up spot.

Ramazotti has also been nominated in the Goal of the Year category alongside the Albirex Niigata (S) trio of Tomoki Menda, Atsushi Kawata and Shuto Inaba and Hougang United FC’s Iqbal Hussain.

Meanwhile, DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean has also been nominated in the Coach of the Year shortlist for the third consecutive season alongside overwhelming favourite Naruo Naoki of Albirex Niigata (S) and Hougang United FC’s coach K Balagumaran.

Kean has justified his selection among the contenders after an excellent form in the third round of the season while Balagumaran had boosted hopes of third place after a good string of results.

No DPMM FC’s representatives made the list in the Young Player and Player of the Year Awards this season.

Albirex Niigata (S) defender Naofumi Tanaka will be battling it out alongside Hougang United FC’s M Anumanthan and Home United FC’s duo of Shahrin Saberin and Song Uiyong in the Young Player of the Year category.

Meanwhile, Atsushi Kawata will face stiff competition alongside last year’s recipient Hougang United FC’s Fumiya Kogure, Home United FC striker Ken Ilso and Tampines Rovers FC creative midfielder Hafiz Sujad for the coveted Player of the Year.

Much of the talk has centred on the arrival of former Liverpool and Arsenal player Jermaine Pennant at the start of the season with increased attendance observed in friendly games.

Singapore’s The Straits Times has earned a nomination with Chua Siang Yee’s captivating piece of Pennant’s embarking a new start at Tampines to re-establish his career among four articles in contention for the Story of The Year Award.

Albirex have also featured prominently after a swashbuckling run to their maiden S League title including nomination for the Fan Club of the Year while they are also already guaranteed the Fair Play Award.

UNDER the flags of the 50 states of America, the three-day ‘Let’s Go America’, an annual public diplomacy initiative to provide accurate information on studying, doing business, travel and culture in the United States, was officially launched by US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Craig B Allen at the Times Square Shopping Centre yesterday.

Organised by the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, the annual event will feature consultations and offer registration facilities for US embassy programmes and services such as EducationUSA for information on studying in the United States, The Fullbright scholar and student programmes, the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI), eLibraryUSA for access to online publications, journals, e-books and multi-media content as well as the US visa application.

The showcase also includes US food, travel and hotel franchises as well as a musical performance, a cooking demonstration and a creative presentation.

The US ambassador in his speech highlighted the long-established relationship between the United States and Brunei.

“The United States of America and Brunei Darussalam share a long history of mutual friendship. It has been just over 170 years since a US ship – the USS Constitution – first visited Brunei in 1845. That visit was the first official opportunity for representatives of our two countries to meet in Brunei to develop mutual understanding and friendship.

“Only five years later after the first visit, Brunei Darussalam and the United States of America formally signed a Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation that is still in effect. Our two countries share a historic and robust relationship. Our people-to-people relationship is an important element of this relationship and one that contributes to grow it every year.”

On ‘Let’s Go America’, he said, “We hope to be able to share knowledge and first-hand information about the United States of America to counter any misunderstanding and deepen our ties.

“Some of the information that we will be sharing over the next three days includes US higher education opportunities, travel info, insights into doing business in the United States and visa information, apart from some cultural elements including music, food demonstrations and others.”

To kick start the event with a bang, the audience were treated to a song performance by the staff of the US embassy.

Creating a high performance culture

IN THE current economic climate, it is important for business leaders to lead change and create high performance cultures within their organisations.

The topic of creating a high performance culture was highlighted at the recent Leading Business in Asia Forum by speaker Rohn Rajen, a Principal Consultant and Partner at Human Capital Group Asia Limited.

Rajen has over 20 years expertise in training, coaching and consulting, and is also an author and motivational speaker. A sports physiologist by qualification, he has in-depth knowledge and understanding of human potential and behaviour modification.

At the forum, he delivered a presentation on the topic, ‘Leading Change: How is a high performance culture created?’

He provided a definition of culture in this context, saying, “Corporate culture is how every employee knows she or he must act… even when no one is watching!”

In his presentation Rajen highlighted four critical success factors for creating a high performance culture: direction – a common understanding of where a company is headed and why; roles and responsibilities – clear expectations for individual and team contribution; commitment – meaningful work and rewards; and capability – building capacity to deliver result.

Prior to the forum, Rajen highlighted in an email interview with the Weekend Bulletin that change is key to growth and profitability.

“If you stay the way you are, you will have increasing difficulties staying alive,” he said.

“But, to change for the better, you cannot simply follow what others are doing. You must lead change. You need to be fast, unique and relevant,” he said. “You need to build credibility and trust both within your organisation and your customers. Those are the key competitive factors now.”

He also shared that a number of consistent traits have been seen in high performance organisations compared to the rest.

“One of the most important characteristics of high performance organisations is that they have decentralised leadership. In essence, they share leadership. For example, employees are empowered to lead within their sphere of influence and responsibility. This is particularly true for frontline employees who interact directly with customers and suppliers,” Rajen said.

“I concur with current business and organi-sational leaders that change is very difficult, particularly as any successful transformation depends on people changing their mindsets and behaviour! Yet, we have many success stories and are ready to share proven methodologies for culture transformation that work in our VUCA environment,” he added.

TO FURTHER bolster Brunei’s already strong trade and industrial relations with South Korea, the Sultanate’s flagship carrier Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) will operate direct charter flights to Incheon International Airport, a move that will boost tourism industry in both countries.

The national carrier inked an agreement in this regard with FOB Sdn Bhd this Thursday.

Karam Chand, Chief Executive Officer of RB, and Park Sung Ho, Chief Executive Officer of FOB Sdn Bhd signed on the dotted lines, witnessed by Christina Chua, RB’s Head of Loyalty, Freight and Ancillary; and Choi Hee Jeong, Director of IMK Holdings on behalf of FOB Sdn Bhd.

Under the agreement, RB will be operating its A320ceo aircraft weekly twice from Bandar Seri Begawan to Incheon, South Korea (and vice versa) commencing on December 29, 2016 until December 28, 2017.

“The introduction of this direct charter flights signifies RB’s commitment in developing its route network, diversifying its revenue base and providing a solid platform for Brunei’s tourism development and growth,” said Karam Chand.

According to Brunei’s Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong, South Korea is Brunei’s second largest trading partner and the Sultanate wanted to see this relationship enhanced especially on the tourism sector.

Recently, South Korean Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Cho Won-myung, had expressed his country’s interest in launching a direct flight between the two countries.

The direct flight will cut travel cost and time for businessmen and other travellers from both countries, as the Brunei-South Korea route currently uses a connecting flight either through Malaysia or Singapore which is inconvenient and time-consuming, he had said.

Aside from developing tourist traffic between Brunei and South Korea, the charter service also aims to develop business opportunities for both nations.

FOB Sdn Bhd is also working with The Empire Hotel & Country Club in promoting the hotel to the Korean market as the main accommodation for honeymooners and golfers, as well as introducing Korean products to the Bruneian market via shops that will set up at the hotel.

RB’s regional network today comprises nine points in Southeast Asia: Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar in Indonesia; Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia; Manila in the Philippines; Bangkok in Thailand; Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Singapore.

Three points are also served in China – Hong Kong, Shanghai and Zhengzhou – while the long-haul network consists of Melbourne in Australia, Dubai in the UAE and London in the UK.

Seasonal services are operated to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia during the Haj and Umrah pilgrimages.
