Dubbed the most intelligent business saloon, the new 10th generation E-Class delivers stylish highlights with its distinct, emotive design and high-grade interior. The new E-Class also marks the world premiere of numerous technical innovations, promising comfortable, safe driving on a new level plus a new dimension in driver assistance and a comprehensive infotainment and control systems offering an all-new experience – among other things, said Jati Transport.

The sum total of its inn-ovations, including the Active-Lane change Assistant which allows the driver to steer into the selected lane as if by magic, makes the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in the business class, Jati Transport added.

General Manager of Jati Transport, Alfred So, highlighted several awards the new E-Class has received, such as the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016 for its Multibeam LED headlamps, the Automotive Interiors Expo Awards for the best interior of a standard-production automobile, with the touch control buttons on the steering wheel of the same model series being voted Interior Innovation of the Year.

The general manager went on to say that the new E-Class has always been the core of the Mercedes-Benz brand and in the past has repeatedly redefined the standards in the business-class segment. “Now it carries this tradition into the future with a wealth of top-class innovations. The new E-Class enhances efficiency, safety and comfort, reduces the stress level while driving and increasing the motoring pleasure.”

The new E-Class also achieved a full five-star Euro NCAP rating for its occupant safety, child safety, pedestrian protection and assistance systems.

SINCE its inception in 2004, the Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology (CCCT), has produced a total of 1,333 graduates with a significant number employed in both the government and private sector, said Dr Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Abdul Latip, Chairman of CCCT.

Speaking at the CCCT’s 10th Convocation Ceremony yesterday, Dr Haji Abdul Aziz said, “We are very proud of this achievement, and hope that our role as a strategic partner of the Ministry of Education will continue, in providing a better education and future for Brunei’s young population.

“Job opportunities in Brunei are getting harder and harder. The number of students graduating each year is growing faster than the jobs being created. Prospective employers these days are looking at not just qualification but also at how employee potential can contribute to the bottom line result of an organisation.

“It is for this reason we have been helping our students with their own supervised work attachment workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to prepare them for employability,” he said.

Meanwhile, three top students at the CCCT shared the secrets of their success with the Sunday Bulletin.

Adinasuaedah binti Damit, a part-time student who received the best student award in HND in Business Management, said, “Since I work during the day in a cottage industry and cooperative, and have a family, I had to manage my time well, to avoid stress.

“I had to divide my qualitative time between studying and enjoying life. Work-life balance is important.”

On student life at the CCCT, she said, “We normally have group discussions to broaden ideas. After every assessment, we ask each other about how we are doing. It’s such a healthy competition.”

Having just completed her studies at CCCT, Adinasuaedah is currently pursuing a business management course at another private institution.

Meanwhile, Siti Amal Munirah binti Yahya, a full-time student and a recipient of the Best Student award in HND in Business Management, said that time management was crucial for the mother of a young child.

“Every evening, I revise for my examination and try not to wait till last minute,” she said. “My parents and husband gave me motivation to do my best, and were supportive of my endeavours.

“I have applied for several jobs, but am still waiting for a favourable outcome. Currently, I am engaged in online business selling food, although not on a regular basis.”

Meanwhile, Muhammad Adi Razi bin Sharbini who received the Best Student Award in International Diploma for Business Level 4, is currently working in a logistics company.

“I always wanted to be different,” he said. “Not being the most academically gifted in my class, I had to invent my own way of studying. My teachers and parents were my main motivators.

“I have always felt great empathy and an appreciation for the teachers who are genuinely working hard to better their students,” he added.

BRUNEI Darussalam coach Kwon Oh Son heaped praise on winger Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Faiq on his return to the first team despite arriving from a long haul trip from the United Kingdom during the semi-final loss to Macau in the AFC Solidarity Cup on Saturday.

The national team were denied a place in Tuesday’s final after losing out in a 4-3 penalty shoot-out loss moments after Faiq unluckily struck his shot against the post having left two Macau players in his wake late in the second period of extra time.

His individual qualities on the pitch has not left unnoticed as Kwon was quick to point out how influential the player was to the team.

The Leicester City starlet’s return to the starting line-up was a welcoming boost to Kwon’s charges given his international experience at the club reserves level.

“Faiq was very important, he brought us a lot of positivity and he was excellent,” Kwon told AFC.

“I want to praise every aspect of his performance because he only arrived from the UK yesterday and it’s a 15-hour journey and he was ready in every way and he played the whole game,” said the South Korea tactician.

Kwon believes the winger could reach far greater heights in his progress in football and acknowledged his footballing status in the region.

Brunei’s goal-scorer Shahrazen Said keeps a watchful eye on a Macau player during their AFC Solidarity Cup semi-final tie.

“He was excellent, he’s an icon of Brunei and for South East Asian football and he can grow to be a world-class player. It’s important to support him well,” the coach added.

Meanwhile, the coach vented his frustration after seeing his side surrender their half-time lead despite a stellar performance from Faiq throughout the 120 minutes.

“The players fought really well for more than one hour with only 10 men,” said Kwon.

Kwon was surprised that his players performed well and could still create opportunities despite handicapped by goalkeeper Wardun Yussof’s sending-off in the second half.

“It’s true that really I didn’t expect the players to play this well with 10 men. They were excellent and we had plenty of chances, which is amazing with 10 against 11,” he said.

“We were fully prepared for the game mentally, physically and technically as well.”

The coach also said that it is a crucial for his players to get into good condition for the Laos game and warned the difficulty of their opponents as a good side.

“Laos is also a very good team and only lost on penalties to Nepal,” said Kwon.

THE UBD-APEN JAIF Multiversity Seminar 2016 was held yesterday at the Institute of Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

According to a press release, the seminar themed ‘To Develop an Effective Curriculum For Engineering Education’ was one of the initiatives agreed upon in the memorandum of Understanding inked on March 30 between the Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology (AIIT), Japan and UBD, which formalised collaborations under the Asia Professional Education Network – Japan Asean Integration Fund (APEN-JAIF) projects.

The main scope of the multiversity project is to carry out comparative studies of professional education systems at the higher education institutions.

Along with UBD, other participating countries and universities in the APEN-JAIF projects include the Institute of Technology Cambodia (Cambodia), the Institute of Technology Bandung (Indonesia), the National University of Laos (Laos), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia), Yangon Technological University (Myanmar), De La Salle University (Philippines), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and Vietnam National University (Vietnam).

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Chandratilak De Silva Liyanage, Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT), UBD, said, “Today, it has been over three years since UBD and APEN (Asia Professional Education Network) signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which solidified our collaboration. Significant achievements have been made since then. Some of the projects include Project-Based Learning (PBL) through teleconferencing between Japan, Brunei and New Zealand, student and staff mobility and Innovation project competitions.

“This year, UBD has spearheaded a new and exciting collaboration between Asean member countries and Japan through APEN under the support of JAIF.

“The MoU for APEN-JAIF was signed in March 2016 and it enabled us to broaden our scope to enhance the networking between Asean member countries under two projects titled: Credibility Index for Small and Medium Enterprises (CIS) and the comparative studies of professional education systems in the higher education institutions of Asean member countries.”

Detailing the multi-fold benefits of the project, he said that a successfully-mapped education system will provide the respective universities and institutions with a benchmark tool for curriculum development and the data obtained could be published as research.

“At UBD, we have initiated a major transformation of our education system in 2008. The curriculum is broad-based and multi-disciplinary.

“The curriculum underscores entrepreneurship, leadership, innovation and environmental awareness in all our students. We call it the Generation Next curriculum. We prioritise the importance of enterprise and are continually reviewing the curriculum to suit the needs of stakeholders. In fact, this kind of broad-based educational model is the preferred type of professional education system proposed under the Multiversity project map.

“In addition, we at the Faculty of Integrated Technologies, in consultation with Stevens Institute of Technology in the USA, have pioneered in Brunei Darussalam, a unique ‘Design Spine’ curriculum in the Systems Engineering programme which involves the teaching of engineering design modules. This enables our students to be better prepared and exposed to real-life engineering design problems as well as hands-on experiential learning.

“UBD always ensures its existence will be relevant through mutual collaborations and partnerships with other universities and institutions. We will fully take advantage of these opportunities to the best of our abilities by collaborating with Asean and Japan. This Multiversity project helps us to shape our engineering curriculum to align with the needs of the country and the region,” Professor Chandratilak De Silva Liyanage said.

Also present at the seminar was Dr Chin Wei Keh, Director of the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE), Dr Seiichi Kawata, President of AIIT, APEN members, representatives from participating universities and institutions and FIT faculty members.

THE Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has embarked on various initiatives and reforms aimed at making the country’s environment conducive, attractive and competitive for both local and foreign businesses.

This was highlighted by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Dato Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, in his capacity as the Deputy Chairman of DARE (Darussalam Enterprise), while delivering his speech at the launching of Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (DPPMB) new image, ‘The Way Forward’, held at the main auditorium of the Design & Technology Building in Anggerek Desa.

He explained that Brunei has been recently announced as the most improved economy for the second year running by the World Bank in its Doing Business 2017 report. In terms of doing business, Brunei jumped 25 places from the previous year to rank 72 out of the 190 economies surveyed worldwide.

“The improvement initiatives undertaken by the government have demonstrated its continued commitment to ensure the overall ecosystem remains relevant and effective for business,” he continued.

“These efforts have also been consistent and in line with the country’s endeavour to encourage greater participation and contribution of our local businesses towards economic growth of the country, particularly in the non-oil and gas sector.”

He noted that it has been the government’s top priority to create a dynamic and sustainable economy for the country. Considering the current situation, he said that Brunei’s economy still depends on oil and gas and that it is crucial for all stakeholders to play their role and take bold measures to spur growth and transform the economy into a more competitive and sustainable position.

He also emphasised the importance of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to actively engage in economic activities that have the strong potential to bring about sustainable growth, particularly in the non-oil and gas sector.

He urged MSMEs to step up their efforts in increasing not only their level of competitiveness and capability, but also in becoming more competent, resilient, as well as creating economies that can present more new business opportunities, employ more local people and generate more revenue and export opportunities.

“In supporting and encouraging the development of our local businesses, the establishment of DARE has provided a platform for better facilitation of the overall support system. The setting up of the Business Support Centre has allowed for a more integrated and streamlined approach towards handling business-related processes as well as resolving business-related issues,” he continued.

According to him, the expansion of DARE in Kuala Belait allows it to reach out to a greater part of the business community. The deputy minister also highlighted DARE’s effort to further enhance the fundamentals of local enterprises in starting, running and growing their businesses, which has led the organisation to introduce a well-structured learning and development programme called the Industry Business Academy (IBA).

“This programme was created after analysing the various issues and real needs of our businesses, with the aim to provide a holistic development platform where they can increase their skills and knowledge in multi-aspect and multi-level of their businesses,” he said.

However he also stressed that one of the main challenges faced by local businesses is the access to finance, especially for the MSMEs, because bank loans are still considered as the main source of external funding for the majority of them.

“The recent launching of the revised Microcredit Financing Scheme is hoped to ease access to funding for micro and small enterprises, it is however important to note that as businesses grow and mature, there is a need to consider other funding sources such as angel investors, venture capital as well as private equity funds where opportunities to strengthen financial base and the expansion of market network can be achieved,” he said.

He further emphasised that MSMEs have become more important in achieving Brunei’s economic development agenda and that greater focus is needed towards making the sector more viable and significant. He said that it is essential to transform MSMEs into a business system that can create sustainable and competitive opportunities for the people and economy.

“DPPMB’s renewed focus, I believe, will present opportunities for more concerted efforts to further the interest of the local business community and ensure that their development is always at the forefront of our economic goals.

“I urge DPPMB to play a bigger role and stand out in shaping the growth of our local businesses, continue to seek opportunities in areas of common interest and contribute to the strengthening of trade and business relations for the country’s greater economic prosperity, in line with the objectives of Brunei Vision 2035,” he added.
