RECENT numbers show an increase in HIV cases in the country, said Iswandy Ahmad, President of the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAC), yesterday while stressing the need for further action through education, research, preventive measures and awareness among the public.

“There is an urgent need to reach out to key groups in the population to raise HIV awareness,” he said.

“Our message to them should include ways of preventing infection and encouraging tests.”

He was speaking during a prize presentation ceremony, held at the Maya Puri branch of The Coffee Bean Brunei in the capital, for the winners of a short video competition recently organised by the council to promote AIDS/HIV awareness through social media.

Headlined ‘RED: Re-educate, Empower, De-stigmatise’, the competition which was open to the public took place in conjunction with World AIDS Day on December 1.

NO INJURIES were reported following a brief turbulence onboard a Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) flight that was enroute to Bandar Seri Begawan from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday afternoon.

The national carrier in a statement issued on its website said that flight BI872 experienced momentary air turbulence during cruise following meal service causing some items to fall onto the floor of the aircraft.

Photos taken on a mobile phone (see bottom photo) by a passenger on the flight showed food and beverage items scattered on the floor of the aircraft’s aisle.

RB said such incidents of turbulences are unexpected and seldom occur but reassured that their crew are fully trained to deal with such operational issues. “No passengers or crew members were hurt during the turbulence and the aircraft landed safely in Bandar Seri Begawan at 02:32pm as scheduled,” the airline added in the statement.

Call to raise public awareness on AIDS

FOR the past three years, Brunei Darussalam has recorded an upward trend in HIV cases whereby from January to November 2016, there were already 34 cases recorded while in 2015, there were 28 cases and in 2014 there were 17 cases.

Altogether there have been 172 cases of HIV reported among citizens and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam since the first case of HIV was detected in 1986.

Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council’s (BDAC) President Iswandy Ahmad, during the prize presentation of a short video competition with the theme ‘R.E.D: Re-educate, Empower, De-stigmatise’ to mark the celebration of World AIDS Day yesterday, expressed that he was not surprised with the figures after finding out the increase of cases in the local newspaper.

“We have seen the increase of cases since 2014. The rise in cases can also be attributed to the increase of awareness whereby more people are getting tested with the good medical healthcare provided by the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the private sectors,” he said.

According to Dr Ahmad Fakhri bin Haji Junaidi, HIV expert in the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council said, “The group age is spread out from 20 years-old to 70 years-old. Majority is in 20 to 40 years old. A majority of the cases contracted HIV through unprotected sex.”

On tackling increasing HIV cases, Iswandy Ahmad highlighted that “We are utilising the most effective and most sustainable approach by educating and raising awareness. We are increasingly reaching out to the community through HIV awareness talks in schools, HIV awareness programme for peers and youths, utilising social media to reach out to the public.”

Photo shows HIV and AIDS awareness leaflets being distributed during Bandarku Ceria.

Photo shows HIV and AIDS awareness leaflets being distributed during Bandarku Ceria.

Recently, a hoax was spreading fears of HIV on social media and he urged the public not to spread any unfounded messages on HIV but instead refer to the Ministry of Health as well as BDAC to acquire accurate information. He also advised the public to practise safe sexual behaviour through abstinence and staying faithful to one’s sexual partner.

Meanwhile Billah Hassan, the Secretary for Media and PR of BDAC stressed on the importance of using social media as an effective tool to reach out to the younger generation. BDAC will continue to engage with the local youths to increase awareness on HIV.

Touching on the stigma of the disease, Dr Ahmad Fakhri Junaidi explained that “stigma perpetuates itself by making people afraid of the disease therefore people are afraid to get tested, which can cause the virus to continue spreading. Therefore we need to continue our efforts to reduce people’s fear of the disease and people also need to be more aware of how HIV is transmitted which is mostly through sexual activity in Brunei. HIV cannot be transmitted by physical contact, sharing food, shaking hands and others, however there are still people who believe that HIV can be easily transmitted through such methods and is causing fear to people who are living with HIV.”

“The society’s perception of people living with HIV isn’t up to the level where people living with HIV are comfortable talking about their status,” added Iswandy Ahmad.

As for plans in 2017, he mentioned that “BDAC is looking at effective and creative approaches to reach out to the public and we are looking at reaching out to working groups as well as to work with the private sector in advocating HIV awareness.”

TOURISM authorities are mulling to establish the traditional local dish ‘Bamboo Chicken’ as an authentic Bruneian delicacy to complement the wide range of traditional delicacies available, while also planning to host a ‘Brunei Gastronomy Week’ to raise more awareness on traditional local cuisines.

The Tourism Development Department of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) in collaboration with the Sumbiling Eco Village in the Temburong District recently held a pilot project with executive chefs and teams from top hotels as well as restaurants in the country for a cooking class on the Bamboo Chicken.

The department said these classes would later be extended to other hotels and restaurants who are interested in offering the dish.

“Brunei has a unique opportunity to champion the Bamboo Chicken as one of its national dishes. Where Korea is known for its Kimchi, Thailand for Tom Yam Goong Soup and Japan for its Sushi, Brunei will have its own unique dish, Brunei Bamboo Chicken. This was discussed by members of the Brunei Tourism Board during the recent board meeting,” it added in a press release.

The Bamboo Chicken, also locally known as ‘Manok Pansuh’ is a traditional Iban dish which features succulent pieces of chicken marinated in ginger and lemon grass then stuffed into a hollow green bamboo before finally sealing the tube with banana leaf and carefully cooking on an open fire pit.

The Tourism Development Department said it wants to promote the Bamboo Chicken as an authentic Bruneian delicacy showcasing Brunei’s culinary diversity and creating awareness on Brunei’s expansive gastronomy.

Other popular Bruneian delicacies include Acar Buah-Buahan, Sup Kembayau, Sup Tahai, Ambuyat, Soto Brunei, Nasi Katok, Daging Masak Kunyit (beef cooked in turmeric) as well as desserts such as Wajid, Cendol and Selurut.

According to Salinah Salleh, a Senior Officer from the Tourism Development Department, who led the Temburong trip over the weekend recently, the initiative was a result of the recent Brunei Tourism Board Meeting where board members agreed to have a Brunei Gastronomy Week on February 22–26, 2017 in conjunction with the 33rd National Day celebrations.

She said participating restaurants will be promoting their own signature dishes during Gastronomy Week, whereby Brunei cuisines must be seen as the highlight of the buffet or ala carte menu.

Other restaurants and hotels from the four districts as well as Royal Brunei Airlines may also take part and hold their own promotion during the week to celebrate Brunei Gastronomy.

The discussion in Temburong also included ways in which the presentation of Bruneian dishes could be further improved and even be served as part of the fine dining experience or at receptions held within or outside the country.

The hotels and restaurants that took part in the Bamboo Chicken cooking class recently included The Empire Hotel & Country Club, Royal Brunei Catering, Rizqun International Hotel, Radisson Hotel, Orchid Garden Hotel and Energy Kitchen.

BRUNEI’S MMA fighter Mohd Nurhidayat bin Haji Abdul has underlined his ambition of competing in the mixed martial arts promotion ONE Championship after extending his undefeated record to three victories against Malaysia’s Adam Putera at the Warriors Fight Challenge IV powered by Reebok in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia recently.

The Busiido MMA artist won the fight via submission in 1:34 in the flyweight AM category.

The Royal Brunei Navy personnel was visibly pleased of the win especially after being given the opportunity to contest in the fight card for a second time this year.

Muhd Nurhidayat had earlier emerged victorious against India’s Kishan Gupta at the Jesselton Fight League (JFL) in September.

“It is not an easy matter for me and my team because we have to make preparations twice in a limited time,” said Mohd Nurhidayat in an interview with the media.

The fighter faced a greater challenge when he was required stitches on his injured feet which he sustained from training a week before the clash.

He said that the unfortunate incident could have easily affected his training and performance.

Mohd Nurhidayat, who first appeared in the first Borneo MMA event three years ago in the Borneo Fighting Championship, enjoys pursuing a fresh challenge.

Brunei’s MMA fighter Muhd Nurhidayat bin Haji Abdul extended his undefeated record to three wins last weekend.

“And I hope that there will be an opportunity to fight in the ONE Championship… that is my dream,” added the MMA fighter.

The Brunei fighter advised those who intends to join MMA not to exercise their knowledge and the basic foundations beyond the confines of the ring and the gym and invited interested individuals to attend training at the gyms which provides MMA lessons in the country.

“You have to feel it on your own how it feels to be a MMA fighter. And don’t ever be influenced by anyone,” continued Md Nurhidayat.

“MMA does not make individuals to be bullies but it helps an individual to be more disciplined in their lives,” concluded the Bruneian.

Bird watch enthusiasts take keen interest in Brunei

ACCORDING to the East Asian – Australasian Flyway Project (EAAFP), Bird watching is one of the popular wildlife watch activities in the Asia region.

In Brunei Darussalam, it is increasingly becoming one of the important biodiversity educational and ecotourism products. The pristine forest ecological transition of the country from mountain to coastal areas provides a suitable transit and breeding paradise for all sorts of wildlife including shore birds. In the coastal areas, the mudflats within the mangrove ecosystems in Brunei Bay continue to provide both roosting and feeding sites for shore birds.

Findings have shown that the species observed were not confined to the birds that are endemic to the Borneo Island. EAAFP recognises Brunei Darussalam as one of the important transit assemblage sites within the flyway for some known migratory birds such as egrets, storks, gulls, wimbrells and terns. These species have been spotted by a group of bird enthusiasts from Project Habitat (Bruwild).

Surprisingly, birds such as the night-migrating, Hooded Pitta, were one of the rare species recently spotted in the Tutong area by the group. It is believed to be only found in other areas on the Island except Brunei Darussalam. Its appearance in the country has been attracting international scientists for educational purposes.

With the growing interest among bird enthusiasts, due to high concerns on the continuous depreciation of habitats within the flyway region, the team, supported by the Heart of Borneo (HoB) Centre, has been working with international bodies to record species found within the specific habitats in the country especially from Japan.

The international recognition given to the country by the association will positively impact national efforts towards economic diversification through the forest conservation plan of the HoB initiative.

THE Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has evinced keen interest to extend cooperation in enhancing trade with Brunei.

Brunei companies can participate in the development process of Kuwait and vice versa through public-private partnerships (PPP) and on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis, Sehab Al-Tawfiqi, Director of the Registration Department at the Kuwait Chamber, said yesterday.

He was speaking at a dialogue session between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) and the KCCI yesterday at International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

Sehab Al-Tawfiqi, said the meeting will help boost bilateral ties between the two nations and give ample business opportunities in Brunei. Current bilateral trade figures are not encouraging, which means that more efforts need to be done to improve the position.

“We in the private sector have a head-start in the Sultanate and the foundation has already been laid when Brunei Darussalam established diplomatic ties with Kuwait in 1990. The leadership of both countries have clearly laid solid foundations that made us strong and resilient. It has been enabling businesses, especially SMEs and MSMEs, to flourish and support export-oriented larger enterprises as we build our capacity to grow and export as part of our national agenda even amid low oil prices,” he said in a press statement.

THE proposed two-and-a-half year long literacy and numeracy coaching project, developed jointly by Education Development Trust (EDT), or Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) and the Ministry of Education (MoE), will take off in January 2017.

The programme, which is crafted for teachers in schools across the country, is hoped to deliver systematic improvement in the quality of literacy and numeracy teaching in schools using coaches as the key change agents to improve teaching practice.

The project is designed to drastically improve students’ standard and performance in English and Mathematics subjects with the help of international coaches working along-side local teachers.

The innovative project also aims to support the implementation of the SPN21, or National Education System for the 21st Century initiative, ensuring high literacy and numeracy standards.

Over the span of the project, 60 international coaches will work directly with teachers who have been identified during an inception phase in one-to-one coaching sessions. These coaches have come from high performing education systems across the world as well as CfBT.

During an official launching ceremony held at the MoE building, Old Airport Road yesterday, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education, remarked the urgency to produce highly skilled English and Mathematics teachers.

“We want our students in lower primary to develop a strong foundation in English and Mathematics while students in upper primary consolidate their learning in English and Mathematics and apply this both in school and beyond,” the minister hoped, adding that consequently, secondary level students can extend their learning in the subjects and apply them with self-independence.

He shared that during the first year of its implementation, a total of 596 learning partners from the entire 149 primary and secondary schools will be coached and at a later stage, the programme will allow local teachers to be trained as coaches to continue to work to ensure sustainability.

The minister said the project aims to have 80 highly qualified and accredited local coaches by 2019. The longer-term goal is to have two local coaches for numeracy and literacy in every school by 2020 in the country to help every child achieve their potential.

“It is crucial that at the end of this project we increase human and organisational capacity development at all levels of the system as well as create a strong culture and support structure to enable high student performance,” added the minister.

He went on to highlight the crucial need to have strong literacy and numeracy skills which he said will lay the foundation for all students to succeed at school, and later at work and in their daily lives.

He also urged stronger collaboration among different departments in the MoE to ensure the success and effective implementation of the programme, while noting several challenges such as the lack of available data faced by the project team during the inception phase.

“We don’t have a centralised data management system. I hope that the relevant departments that are in charge of these data will work together to find a solution to overcome this problem because we will be relying heavily on the data to see the progress for us to be able to give appropriate and effective support to our teachers and students,” the minister stressed.

The overall project goals were developed by combining the relevant objectives of the Brunei Vision 2035 to create educated, highly skilled and accomplished people with the MoE’s Seven Grand Initiatives which include ensuring highly qualified English and Mathematics teaching and all students are highly numerate and literate in English as well as creating a system empowered to deliver sustained improvements in literacy and numeracy.

During the first year, coaches will work in primary schools with teachers of Years 1, 2, 5 and 6 to support the programme’s implementation and preparations for the Primary School Assessment (PSR).

MoE is also preparing secondary schools to take the Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA) tests in 2018. PISA is an international survey that evaluates education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics and science.

The PISA tests take place every three years and Brunei students will be taking the Reading and Mathematics test in 2018 to allow the country to evaluate itself in comparison with international standards and achieve its 2035 aspirations. The coaches will also be on hand to support Brunei’s PISA readiness.

MoE said two types of schools will receive support in the programme. They are ‘Grow’ schools that can develop quickly to share good practices with other schools and ‘Accelerated Grow’ schools whose results are currently below expectations.

All schools receive one day of support a week while some will receive more, depending on need. Coaches will teach together with class teachers and share best practices and will also support school principals to create a close working relation between the programme, school leaders and heads of cluster.

GT ENGINEERING, a local auto shop specialising in performance modifications and maintenance of the Nissan GTR recently made a key breakthrough by winning a prestigious drag race held in Kuching recently.

The all-wheel Nissan GT-R35, tuned and engineered by the specialists’ who have been operational in Brunei for four years, were crowned champions in two racing categories at the inaugural Zer082wo Drag War held at Demak Laut Industrial Park from November 11-12.

Driver, Jack Tan from Brunei was the fastest drag racer in his 850 horsepower Nissan GT-R35 competing in the Class A – 2WD/4WD Pro Drag and the Class F – 2WD/4WD Pro Street Turbo.

Among the tough rivals during the drag race were variations of the lighter and equally fast Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and the hot hatchback, Honda Civic, driven by experienced racers.

In celebration of the achievement, GT Engineering recently hosted a mini-gathering by inviting their loyal customers and Nissan GTR enthusiasts at GT Engineering located in Menglait.

Present was Director of GT Engineering, Lim Jin Hou who accredited the win to his team who have spent countless hours to developed the GT-R35 with the right setup.

“The GTR can turn from a reliable street car into a very competitive race car due to our advanced map selection via the cruise control. It’s with the cob-tuning software that enabled us to select different driving modes which is all custom-programmed by us at GT engineering,” he said.

One of the biggest challenges faced during the drag race was transporting the cars to Kuching. It took the GT Engineering team five gruelling days of travelling (on dual-trailer) and competing at the same time but all the hard work paid off with the podium finish.

His team has been competing in various parts of Malaysia with the flagship GT-R35 tuned and designed by GT Engineering to win podium finishes since 2012.

Moving forward, Lim would like to carry his passion for fast cars to join in more racing competitions while continuing to design and develop performance parts to be one of the leading car tuners in the region.

Drag racing is a type of motor race where automobiles (usually prepared for the purpose) compete two at a time to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short straight course from a standing start over a distance of 402 metres.

The inaugural Zer082wo Drag War, which attracted 20,000 people, drew drag racers from Sabah, Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia and Brunei.

During the event, a total of eight drag bike and car categories were contested.

TABUAN Under-17 have been identified as a long-term youth development project to prepare the men’s football team for the 2021 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The junior players have made huge strides after reaching the semi-finals of the Brunei DST FA Cup 2016 where they knocked out top-tier side Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) in the quarter-finals and earn a clash against Najip I Team.

The Tabuan team are the only team who have not competed in the country’s top flight in the last four of the premier cup competition.

The team was first set up in 2013 which progressed from the under-14 team coached by Stephen Ng as head coach.

In 2014, they participated in the JIS Football Tournament and emerged champions of the under-15 category.

In 2014, Ali Mustafa took over the reins, prepared and oversaw the side’s involvement in the 2015 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Youth Championship.

Ali, serving his third year in charge of the national juniors as head coach, is supported with a dedicated backroom team which include Mohamad Darus bin Tanjung as assistant coach, goalkeeping coach Pengiran Omar Nur Aqammaddin bin Pengiran Haji Sallehuddin and Awangku Kamaluddin bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Noor.

The selection of players began at the end of 2013 and early 2014 and now the players are mostly 16 year olds with a number of them who just turned 17.

The majority of the players have remained in the squad while additions are from schools.

The squad is not the final 25 and still have room for reinforcements as they are looking to fill more capable players.

The coaches and officials also thrive to ensure that these young players achieve the right balance between training and studies.

The team’s coaching staff also formed a good relationship with the parents of the players and in turn they provided cooperation to aid in the progress of the player by allowing them to train on a regular basis.

With this understanding, players also played their part by demonstrating a high level of commitment, teamwork and willingness to improve further.

In addition to their development as a football player, the young players are also being taught good values off the field and being groomed to be a gentleman.

There is no star player in the squad as all players give their maximum effort and commitment collectively.

The team is concerned with the level of performance with results coming later on where a good level of performance will subsequently correlates to positive results.

The coaching team believes time is of the essence for the young juniors.

The Tabuan side is competing in the national league, currently playing in the second division of the Brunei DST Premier League. They finished third last season.

The team’s progress in the national cup competition has been well received and their hopes of making history are very much alive.

The availability of these players proves that the future of Brunei’s football is looking bright.

Women entrepreneurship through innovation

BAG Networks recently took another leap forward in its commitment to develop women entrepreneurship through innovation.

This was announced by Haslina binti Haji Taib, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BAG Networks, in her podium speech entitled ‘Women and Innovation: Crossing the Glass Border’ that was delivered at the World Assembly for Women (WAW!) Brunei Darussalam 2016 with the theme ‘Entrepreneurs – Women – Technology: Crossing the Glass Border’.

The annual event was organised by the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam and co-sponsored by the High Commission of Canada in Brunei Darussalam with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), and CAE Brunei Multi-Purpose Training Centre.

In the speech, Haslina gave a background on the role of women in the economy through the pillars of innovation and technology, from the perspectives of her former involvement in APEC, as well as her ongoing engagement with local entrepreneurs.

Due to the limited domestic market, many of these business owners, more than half of which are women, realised the necessity of expanding overseas.

However, as shared by Haslina, local businesses had numerous concerns on the barriers to going abroad.

Haslina posited innovation as the solution to these challenges, collectively dubbed as the glass border.

In conjunction with WAW! 2016, BAG Networks sponsored a set of mature local entrepreneurs to join the CENDANA e-business community, an ICT-enabled springboard for these businesses to build an economic presence online and cross international boundaries.

This marked the first of many sets of entrepreneurs that would continue to benefit from the latest e-business innovation led by BAG Networks, via its eBunda women entrepreneurship development programme and the CENDANA e-business community platform.

BAG Networks is no stranger to e-commerce technology, being the main driver and organiser behind the highly successful APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC)’s Cross-Border E-commerce Training (CBET) Workshop 2015 in Brunei.

The workshop was attended by 40 business delegates from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, USA, China and Hong Kong, as well as members of the diplomatic corps in Brunei.

This foray led to the launch of CENDANA in 2016, in conjunction with the opening of Darussalam Enterprise’s Business Support Centre, as the most effective online business management and e-commerce platform to help drive the growth of the local private sector.

According to Haslina, “CENDANA represents a community of like-minded people, ranging from start-ups to multi-national corporations, who are passionate in building businesses and in making a difference using ICT as the main enabler.

“Hence, our eBunda network of women entrepreneurs fits naturally as a partner in the CENDANA e-business community.”

“Through CENDANA’s e-commerce capability, which includes easy-to-use and secure online payment methods which will soon be released, we aim to bring together businesses within and outside the country to maximise the international digital market’s growing potential,” she added.

The CENDANA e-business community members also benefit from its cloud-based online business management functions, either as an all-in-one system or by modular options, accessible anytime and anywhere.

Additionally, members may avail of implementation support, training and customisation services, all provided locally by the CENDANA team at BAG Networks.
