Some 100 individuals from the Self Support Recovery Group gathered to mark the first ‘International Recovery Day’ 2020 for Brunei Darussalam recently.

Themed ‘Recovery is Possible’, the event aimed to unite and celebrate individuals in recovery from all addictions, including all recovery pathways from all around the globe.

Attendees wore purple to raise awareness on addiction and substance misuse, prevention, and recovery. The ceremony was co-chaired by Lead Facilitator from the Self Support Recovery Group Pengiran Kamarulazaman bin Pengiran Haji Chuchu, along with recovering partners Haji Mohd Azmi Rafiuddin bin Abdullah and Sheikh Omar bin Sheikh Idham.

Pengiran Kamarulzaman lauded the progress of all recovering partners and hopes the programmes offered through the Self Support Recovery Group and their partners are able to provide a thorough support system to guide individuals back into the community.

Meanwhile, founder of the International Recovery Day John Winslow also joined the group via teleconference call.

John Winslow has worked with public safety at Ground Zero during the 9/11 when he was invited to the White House, where he created the holiday celebrating recovery.

In a quote, he said, “The whole concept was based on the notion that ‘We can do together what none of us could do alone’.”

Officials from the Narcotics Control Bureau, Vice President of the National Anti-Drug Association (BASMIDA) Hajah Linda Aini binti Abdullah as well as other guests were also present.
