The Mukim Serasa Consultative Council (MPM Serasa) celebrated the opening of the Tamu Ria Mukim Serasa initiative at the premises of the Muara Port Company (MPC) yesterday.
The biweekly market, which will open for business on Saturdays and Sundays, was officially launched by Brunei-Muara District Officer cum guest of honour Misle bin Haji Abdul Karim.
MPM Serasa Advisor Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Ahmad bin Haji Jumat also attended.
Legislative Council (LegCo) member and organising committee chairman Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Mohamed bin Pengiran Haji Osman @ Othman said, “Our vision is to educate the mukim community to be more independent without relying on assistance from the government, while also introducing local wares as One Village One Product (1P1K) commodities by mukim residents.
“It is intended to encourage the local community to spend within the country and help boost the nation’s economy, in view of the precautionary measures to fight the spread of COVID-19, as well as encouraging local businesses to be more creative in their efforts, particularly in terms of being competitive with foreign businesses.”
He added, “Mukim Serasa will continue to work hard towards assisting its community to support all forms of entrepreneurship for the long haul, especially in this era of globalisation, which presents a set of challenges.”
The market will operate for three months with the permission of the MPC, and will be allowed to continue if public response is encouraging. At the same time, a more strategic site has been earmarked as an alternative avenue for the vendors to conduct their business activities.
