MUSLIMS in Borneo should continue to be aware of what is lawful (Halal) and forbidden (Haram) under Islamic dietary laws, said Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, the former Minister of Religious Affairs, in a keynote address at the recent 9th International Islamic Borneo Conference (KAIB) that was held in Banjarmasin, Indonesia.
The former minister also emphasised Brunei’s adherence to its Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy through the advancements of religious education, charity, Halal food and Islamic finance.
The two-day conference, which ended on Wednesday, was organised by the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) in Banjarmasin, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Sarawak, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Sabah, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) and University of Samarinda (UNMUL) in East Kalimantan.
A total of 76 papers were presented during the seminar, which provided a forum for discussions on dietary laws as well as other Islamic issues in Borneo.
Representing UNISSA was Dr Arman bin Haji Asmad, the Assistant Rector, while KUPU SB was represented by Dr Abang Haji Hadzmin bin Abang Haji Taha, the Acting Deputy Ra’es.
A resolution was also issued, emphasising Borneo as an ideal place for Islamic brotherhood (Ukhuwwah Islamiyya), education and economics.
The 10th conference will take place next year at the University of Mulawarman in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
