WITH Primary School Assessment (PSR) or Primary School Assessment around the corner, teachers are now working beyond curriculum time at schools.
Despite their heavy workload, teachers have to sacrifice their physical resources and time to give extra classes especially in the preparation days before PSR.
Some students will always need that extra help, extra support and more time.
These students need extra classes where they have the opportunity to learn more and increase their knowledge.
In a set of case studies published in 2005, Massachusetts 2020, an independent organisation dedicated to improving learning opportunities, found that extended schooling allowed for broader and deeper coverage of the curriculum, more opportunities for experiential learning, greater individualisation of instruction, and stronger relationships between adults and students.
Extra classes can benefit students with different capabilities. It provides weak students more practice and reinforcement of concepts and it helps refresh knowledge for higher ability students. There are also usually more examples and problem solving questions compared to during curriculum hours.
Anggerek Desa Primary School is just one of the many schools that conduct extra classes. Apart from the extra hours during school days, teachers also organised extra classes during weekend as the final push to help students with exam preparation. Extra classes provide platform for students to be better prepared for the upcoming PSR.
Cikgu Siti Nooralipah binti Tujoh from Anggerek Desa Primary School stated, “With the fast approaching days towards PSR, we are using the past year exam paper for revision. It is helpful because the students can familiarise with the word problems especially in Mathematics, they are sometimes two problems in one question and students often missed out on the second problem.”
Cikgu Mahalini binti Haji Ali, the Headmistress of Anggerek Desa Primary School also emphasised the role parents take in supporting the school initiatives by sending their child for extra classes and also facilitating and guiding student’s revision at home. “Parents support of school initiatives such as extra classes makes the teachers feel like they have the parents backing and encouragement to try their best in helping the students with the PSR preparation.”
With parents and teachers active collaboration, the children will be better prepared to sit for their PSR, improve their learning strategies and have a greater chance to achieve success and excel in their long-term studies. (Courtesy of Ministry of Education)
