THE local business community learned more about the vast investment and business opportunities available in the United States of America (US) as well as best practices during a business dialogue session hosted by DARE (Darussalam Enterprise) and the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam last evening.
An economic expert from the city of San Diego, Lydia Moreno, who is Deputy Director for Economic Development gave a presentation to some 50 individuals from the local business community, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs) at the Design and Technology Building in Anggerek Desa Technology Park.
Lydia highlighted among others the vast investment opportunities, incentives and advantages available in the city which is home to a strong community of collaborative hi-tech startups, innovators, researchers, regulatory experts, healthcare providers, engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs.
The many industry clusters established and growing fast in the city include aerospace and defence, biotechnology and medical devices, clean tech and energy efficiency, electronics and communications and food and beverage.
She also mentioned the many similarities to the work they are doing to attract investors in San Diego to that of Brunei, especially in providing resources and platforms and also in challenges faced.
Catherine Muller, Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam said that strengthening economic ties and engaging with Brunei on economic diversification is a high priority for the embassy. She noted that Brunei is committed to creating an economy that is more diversified, more entrepreneurial, and more creative.
She added that in this year alone, they have partnered with Brunei across various initiatives that have strengthened Brunei’s economy and deepened Brunei-US economic engagement such as bringing over 20 Brunei entrepreneurs to US government-certified trade shows in industries like healthcare and tourism, and collaborating with DARE to launch an upcoming programme to promote American franchises in Brunei.
According to DARE, the event was one of the many business dialogues it has organised to provide knowledge to SMEs on market access especially to those who are interested and have the potential to export to the US.
This was also part of DARE’s drive to encourage SMEs to identify business opportunities beyond Brunei’s borders to help boost the nation’s exports and GDP growth.
