UTB students attend industrial talk on IoT

A TALK entitled ‘Internet of Things (IoT) LoRaWAN™: Moving Beyond Disruption’ was organised by the Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) School of Business on September 13. The talk was given by Dr Thierry Lestable, the Vice Chairman of LoRa Alliance. The talk was attended by staff and students of the UTB School of Business.

Dr Thierry Lestable introduced LoRaWAN™ and its important role in the Internet of Things (IoT). The LoRaWAN™ is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) specification intended for wireless battery operated Things in regional, national or global network. LoRaWAN™ target key requirements of IoT such as secure bi-directional communication, mobility and localisation services. Dr Lestable emphasised that LoRaWAN™ will provide seamless interoperability among smart Things without the need for complex local installations and gives back the freedom to the users, developers and businesses enabling the roll out of IoT.

Dr Lestable also introduced the LoRa Alliance as an open, non-profit association of members that believes the Internet of Things era is now.

It was initiated by industry leaders with a mission to standardise LoRaWAN™ being deployed around the world to enable IoT, machine-to-machine (M2M), smart city, and other industrial applications. The alliance has gathered over 390 companies in 40 countries, who together build carrier-grade communication networks and sensing solutions to drive a connected world to its full potential. Dr Thierry Lestable the Director of IoT Business Development and Strategic partnerships in Sagemcom Energy and Telecom SAS, France. Dr Lestable has authored over 35 international publications, and more than 20 patents.

He is the editor of a Wiley Book on Advanced Channel coding, co-authored two Wiley Books on B3G/4G Systems, and he is also a Telecom Expert for the European Commission, Eureka Cluster CELTIC, and French National Research Agency (ANR). Dr Lestable was the Chair of the M2M Expert Group in eMobility European Technology Platform.
