Sultan awards prestigious scholarship to six students

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday awarded the prestigious Sultan’s Scholar Scholarships of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah to six students for the 2016-2017 academic session.

Also present at the ceremony, which was held at the Istana Nurul Iman, were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office; His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik, who is the Chairman of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Committee of Governors; and His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel.

This year, four students received the Sultan’s Scholar for the 2016-2017 academic session while another two students received the prestigious scholarship to further their studies at a higher level.

The six students are Kadrina Abdul Latif binti Abdullah, Hajah Izzatul Faizah binti Dr Haji Mohamad, Muhamad Aiman Syafiq bin Haji Ramlee, Siti Hafizah Al-Haziqah binti Ariffin, Hajah Andi Diinah Kiasatinah binti Haji Alliasim and Tan Zong Hao.

They will continue their studies at renowned universities in the United Kingdom and Egypt.

One of the recipients, Kadrina Abdul Latif, was previously awarded a special scholarship scheme under the Human Resources Fund, and studied for her ‘A’ Levels at the Cardiff Sixth Form College, in the United Kingdom. She will continue her studies in Biomedical Sciences at the Imperial College London.

Meanwhile, Hajah Izzatul Faizah was also a previous recipient of the special scholarship scheme under the Human Resources Fund, and also studied for her ‘A’ Levels at the Cardiff Sixth Form College.

Through the Sultan’s Scholar, she will pursue her studies in Law at London School of Economics and Political Science.

Another recipient, Muhamad Aiman Syafiq, is a former student at the Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre, who will be pursuing his studies in Biomedical Engineering at the University College London.

Meanwhile, Siti Hafizah Al-Haziqah, a former student of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB), was previously awarded a government scholarship to pursue a Diploma in ‘Aliyah Qiraat’ at the ITQSHHB for the 2013-2016 session.

Through the Sultan’s Scholar, she will continue her studies in ‘Takhassus Al-Quran Wal Qiraat’ at Maahad Qiraat, Al-Azhar Shoubra, Egypt.

One of the two students who received the Sultan’s Scholar to pursue their education to a higher level, Hajah Andi Diinah Kiasatinah, was also a previous recipient of the prestigious award on September 14, 2013, and graduated with BSc (Hons) Upper Second Class in Biomedical Science at the University College London.

This year, Hajah Andi Diinah Kiasatinah will be pursuing her education to Masters level in Global Governance and Ethics (Political Science), at the University College London.

The second student, Tan Zong Hao, was also a recipient of Special Scheme Scholarship of Human Resources Fund to continue his ‘A’ Levels at Abingdon School, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. He then continued his studies at a Degree level at Warwick University in the United Kingdom, and graduated with First Class Honours in the Integrated Master Degree in Civil Engineering.

Tan Zong Hao will continue his studies at PhD level in Civil Engineering, at the Oxford University.

Yesterday’s ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

His Majesty then presented the Sultan’s Scholar for 2016-2017 session to the six recipients, which was followed by a Doa Selamat from the State Mufti.

Before leaving the ceremony, His Majesty posed for a group photograph, and chatted with the Sultan’s Scholar recipients, their families and invited guests.

Also among those present were the Yayasan Committee of Governors, the Chairman of the Yayasan Board of Directors, members of the Steering and Working Committee and members for the implementation of the Sultan’s Scholar Scholarship Scheme.
