MORE than 200 people comprising members of the public and from various government agencies yesterday took part in a massive cleaning campaign titled ‘Cleanliness responsibility of all’, carried out in a number of areas in Jalan Gadong and the northern areas of Kg Menglait.
The cleaning campaign was organised by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department in collaboration with several government agencies such as the Brunei-Muara District Office, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), the Fire and Rescue Department, the Department of Health Services, Royal Brunei Police Force, members of the Mukim consultative council, and Kg Gadong ‘B’ building owners and tenants.
Speaking to the media, Head of Town Planning and Management Unit, Pengiran Omarali bin Pengiran Mohd Yussof, urged the public especially companies, building owners and tenants to always keep their premises clean and tidy and comply with the various regulations under the Minor Offences Act.
He said the department from time to time will continue to organise campaigns and monitor areas, and will not hesitate to take stern action towards irresponsible companies or individuals, who fail to obey the rules and regulations.
He said the aims of the cam-paign were to ensure that Bandar Seri Begawan will always be clean and free from any pollution, and raise the public’s awareness on the importance of cleanliness, especially since the cleanliness of the city is the responsible of all. The campaign also included cleaning of drainages, surrounding environment and premises.
The campaign hopes to achieve its objective and vision to raise awareness on cleanliness value and the need to maintain the capital environments in line with the declaration as the Asean City of Culture.

Among the targeted areas of the cleaning campaign were the building and shop premises in Jalan Gadong, Kg Menglait (North) starting from Simpang 5 to Simpang 11 and its surrounding areas.
Also present at the event yesterday were Village Head of Kg Menglait, Haji Mohdar bin Haji Ahmad, who said the response from the public was very encouraging.
He hoped such efforts will continue to maintain the cleanliness of the environment and urged the citizens not to throw waste in public places. He said the members of the consultative council will continue to work together with gov-ernment agencies in maintaining cleanliness.
Under the Minor Offences Act, Chapter 30 of Section 12 (1), the storing or disposal of any items in public places is an offence. The company, which is levied with the compound fine, must have it settled within seven days.
If the company fails to settle the fine, the matter will be referred to court and if found guilty, the punishment will be a $1,000 fine or a month’s imprisonment for the first convicted offence. For the subsequent offence, the punishment will be a $3,000 fine or imprisonment of not more than three months.
The Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Department urged companies to maintain the cleanliness of their premises as well as to comply with the various regulations under the Minor Offences Act.
