A DIALOGUE session with a delegation of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Sciences (CATAS) and the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong was held at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism yesterday.

The minister in his brief welcoming remark said Brunei is looking for modern and urban farming technology due to the country’s small size of land and can go for high-end products because the government wants Bruneian farmers to become successful.

“We are also looking for high-yields, and modern and urban farming (procedures, technology) that can grow suitable fruits in small land,” he said, adding that Brunei is also doing some research on methods to increase padi yield and the right padi variety that suits Brunei soil.

The minister expressed confidence that with the aid of the scientists from China, Brunei will be able to develop a suitable variety suited to its soil.

The delegation is in the country to seek more cooperation with Brunei’s agriculture authorities and to explore agricultural opportunities in Brunei.

CATAS has been providing consultation services to farmers and agro-enterprises on agronomic techniques and pest control of rubber, cassava, banana, and tropical fruits trees since 2010 as well as holding international training courses on tropical agriculture for developing countries.
