UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday celebrated the 26th anniversary of the establishment of the Academy of Brunei Studies (APB) at the Senate Room of the Chancellor Hall in UBD.
The day also saw the launching of a book titled ‘Suara Wanita Brunei’ (The Voice of Brunei Women).
Minister of Education cum guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman officiated the launch of the book, which is a compilation of written works of the late Datin Dr Hajah Saadiah binti Datu Derma Wijaya Haji Tamit, a former senior lecturer of APB.
In her welcoming speech, APB Director Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah touched on the role and journey of APB in the past 26 years.
A mini exhibition was also set up, displaying the latest publications of the APB academics at the hallway of the Senate Room. It included a book published by an international publication – Routledge, entitled ‘History, Islam, Society and Contemporary Issues’.
The exhibition also included short videos on the writers of APB’s academics.
A total of 200 people were invited from APB’s stakeholders, both from the government and private sectors, education institutions and individuals who have been committed to APB since its establishment.
Speaking to the Bulletin, Dr Hajah Halimaturradiah binti Dato Seri Setia Haji Metussin, the daughter of the late Datin Dr Hajah Saadiah, noted that the book encompasses women’s issues on problems within the family, social and Islamic law in the country.
She explained that the book is a compilation of the late Datin’s journals and working papers from seminars and conferences that she attended and lectured at, which were compiled by the family into a book after Datin’s passing.
“It would be a waste if it was just left like that, so we compiled all her works and came up with the topic ‘Suara Wanita Brunei’ as the book focuses on women, and discusses why women must be protected and prioritised, especially in the family under the Islamic law,” Dr Hajah Halimaturradiah said.
“The book also talks about how the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) protects the women in Islam, which makes this book very important not only for the public’s knowledge but more importantly for the women who have been abused or those who have been given limited rights especially after divorce.”
