PMMPMHAMB Hospital has potential to be a ‘Centre of Excellence’

THE Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi yesterday led a Muzakarah session (sharing session) with stakeholders, including top representatives from government agencies in the Tutong District, penghulus, village heads and representatives from NGOs.

The meeting, which was also previously held in other districts, came in light of the strategic initiative that is currently being implemented by the Ministry of Health, which said Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah (PMMPMHAMB) Hospital in Tutong becoming the first public hospital to undergo strategic shifts to become a ‘One Stop Centre’ that specialises in certain treatments as it moves towards achieving a ‘Centre of Excellence’.

The minister in his opening remark at the start of the closed-door session said apart from the Ministry of Health’s efforts to provide a more effective healthcare in the country, there were priorities in the aspects of safety and excellent services in order to give the public sustainable services.

He said the PMMPMHAMB Hospital in Tutong has the potential to become a centre of excellence in providing the best healthcare experience for patients that is not exclusive to the residents in the Tutong District but the overall population in Brunei Darussalam as well.

In his speech, the minister elaborated on the possibilities of the PMMPMHAMB Hospital in Tutong becoming a ‘One Stop Centre’ and a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in endoscopic and cataract surgery that will house specialists, medicines and high-quality equipment and recovery wards. The project will also utilise the existing infrastructure at the hospital and will not interrupt with its normal operations.

The minister said this is the best opportunity to enhance healthcare development in the country to a higher level. The Ministry of Health also strives to provide patients with the very best that can be given at the hospitals in the country.

In an interview, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the Ministry of Health, Dr Hajah Maslina binti Haji Mohsin, said the Muzakarah session was a continuation of similar sessions in other districts in the country where the Ministry of Health stated implementing new initiatives since nine to 10 months ago.

Dr Hajah Maslina said the session focuses on the initiative to make every hospital as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in their respective areas. The sessions hoped to gather voices and responses from the public not just residents in Tutong District but also from other parts of the country.

The sessions also hoped to acquire public views on the healthcare services and to share information with the health ministry and suggestions from stakeholders on how to further enhance efforts towards achieving the vision and strategy of the Ministry of Health.

Also present during the Muzakarah session were Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Haji Zakaria bin Haji Serudin, deputy permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Health, senior officers from the Ministry of Health, Tutong District Officer, personnel from the Department of Immigration and National Registration, Royal Customs and Excise Department, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, penghulus and village heads as well as from NGOs.

The Muzakarah session was held at the official residence of the Tutong District Officer.
