AT APPROXIMATELY 2.30pm on Thursday, a ‘fire’ broke out at Orchid Garden Hotel’s (OGH) first floor restaurant (kitchen area), which was followed by a huge ‘explosion’. The OGH building emergency control team took charge of the emergency situation and coordinated their team to evacuate all hotel guests, tenants and hotel staff out from the building to assemble at the assembly point located 100 metres away from the building.

After an emergency call was made around 2.30pm, the Royal Brunei Police Force arrived at the scene within 10 minutes, followed by the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Department and the ambulance unit.

The OGH Fire Marshalls handled the emergency situation during the incident and also proceeded to brief the current status to the Brunei Fire and Rescue services commander, medic team and the Royal Brunei Police Force.

At that point, four staff members ‘were injured and unconscious’, while two others were ‘still missing’. The OGH Building Emergency Team managed to rescue some of the hotel staff before the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Department.

With the assistance of 11 OGH Building Emergency Control committee, all staff, tenants and hotel guests were safely evacuated from the building and directed to the assembly point 100 metres away.

This scenario was part of a fire drill.

“Conducting successful fire response simulations is very important for Orchid Garden Hotel, to ensure the safety of our staff, guests and visitors. Our team members responded quickly and orderly during today’s scenario, demonstrating the emergency readiness,” said Shamsul Bahrin bin Pehin Haji Ahmad, General Manager of Orchid Garden Hotel.

The hotel has been conducting fire drill exercises on an annual basis since 2003, a press release said.

“These drills are conducted not only to test the emergency response from our team, but to also test our newly installed building fire control alarm panel system, smoke detectors, fire break glass and other emergency safety devices, making sure the system works perfectly,” said Mohd Iswandi Maaruf, in his capacity as the Hotel Building Emergency Controller.
