BRIEF but powerful thundershowers triggered flash floods in many low-lying areas in Bandar Seri Begawan and several other parts of Brunei-Muara District last night, leaving many main roads and houses submerged in water.
The heavy rain that began as early as 7pm and lasted for a few hours triggered flash floods that severely affected main roads in Kampong Jangsak, Kampong Beribi, Kampong Katok, Kampong Kiulap, Kampong Kiarong, Jalan Ban 1 to 5 in Kampong Mulaut, Kampong Tanah Jambu, Kampong Meragang and also parts of Mukim Kilanas and Mukim Sengkurong, including Kampong Jerudong.
Many vehicles were stranded and traffic snarls occurred as cars slowed down to evade and even wade through the floodwaters.
Several cars were also reported to be submerged in the floodwaters that were said to have reached up to waist-high and some residential areas were also reported to be partially submerged in water.
The heavy rains also reduced visibility, causing long queues of cars on main highways in the capital.
The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) at 8pm yesterday issued a weather advisory for the Brunei-Muara District, warning of flashflood risks due to heavy continuous thunderstorms. It also warned that strong gusts of wind of up to 40km/h may be possible near heavy rains.
