THE body of a missing local man who was believed to have drowned at Sungai Rasau in Kuala Belait was found by the Marine Police at 1.31pm yesterday.

The victim was identified by the police as Mohd Zulainnie bin Raimey, 24, an employee a local company for six years and the third child of a family which has five other male children.

The deceased’s body was sent to the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital and there were no external injuries found in the examination carried out by a doctor. No post-mortem was carried out.

The Energy and Industry Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EIDPMO) said the deceased was a local marine crew working for QESS Sdn Bhd, a service provider to the Brunei oil and gas sector.

It was reported that the man fell into the Belait River just after 6.41pm on December 3 after the wooden plank he stepped onto broke while fixing another plank between two berthed marine vessels.

The incident happened at the QESS Sdn Bhd’s Rasau jetty and not while the man was carrying out a Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd (BSP) activity, EIDPMO said in a statement.

Search and Rescue operations were conducted immediately with assistance from other nearby vessels and the personnel of Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Fire and Rescue Department. The body of the deceased was found around 1.15pm yesterday, the statement added.

The EIDPMO Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team will work with the other relevant agencies such as the Marine Department, RBPF and the Fire and Rescue Department to investigate the cause of the incident to ensure there is no recurrence.

The EIDPMO offered condolence to the deceased’s family and promised an independent investigation led by EIDPMO to ascertain if there is any breach of the Workplace Safety and Health Order (WHSO). If any non-compliance is found, the contractor can be prosecuted under the WSHO, EIDPMO said.

The department reminded all marine operators and companies, especially those working in the Brunei oil and gas sector, to ensure the safety of the people by strictly following HSE procedures while carrying out their tasks.
