A MEMORANDUM of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday between Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the Occupational and Environmental Institute of Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital, which is based in Bangkok, Thailand.
Signing on behalf of UBD was Dr Hajah Rafidah binti Haji Gharif, the Dean of PAPRSB IHS, while Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital was represented by its director, Dr Somboon Tosborvorn.
The signing was witnessed by Biravij Suwanpradhes, the Ambassador of Thailand to Brunei Darussalam.
Also present to witness the signing were Chair Professor Dr David Koh, the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) at UBD; and Dr Theerapol Topanthanont MD, the Director-General of the Department of Medical Services at Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health.
The MoU will pave way for further collaboration between both countries under the Asean Diagnostic Criteria for Occupational Diseases, with reciprocal visits between Chair Professor Dr David Koh and the leadership of Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital.

In her speech, Dr Hajah Rafidah said that the signing “will definitely strengthen the existing relationship with the Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital, and will bring in more active collaboration in terms of staff and student exchanges, as well as research collaboration.”
“We will also further explore opportunities for our students to study or undergo elective programmes at Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital,” she added.
Dr Theerapol Topanthanont said in response: “The exchange of medical expertise on occupational medicine, including research and development between both agencies, will be the first step forward in the fields of academic and medical knowledge, as well as in the development of technology.
“The result of this commitment will be exchange of personnel, training, cooperation and relation enhancement, technical visits and research between the two agencies.”
On joint research, he said: “I truly believe that it will be one of the most important written testimonies in support of the Asean Diagnostic Criteria for Occupational Diseases, which is now being implemented by all Asean member countries.”
Among the Thai delegation at yesterday’s signing was the deputy director of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Centre, the deputy director of the Cluster of Nursing and the director of Medical Research and Technology Assessment Department. Several principal officers and academics from UBD also attended the ceremony.
