SHOPPING complexes and shops across the country are being decorated in vibrant shades of red in the run-up to Chinese New Year, which fall on January 28.
According to Chinese zodiac, the coming Year of the Rooster starts from January 28 right up to February 15, 2018.
The rooster is the 10th in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac sign.
The Year of the Rooster is almost the epitome of fidelity and punctuality. For our ancestors who had no alarm clocks, the crowing was significant, as it would wake people up to get ready for work. In Chinese culture, another symbolic meaning of the chicken is ‘exorcising evil spirits.’
With just weeks to go before the festivities, the Chinese community in Brunei is readying their homes in preparation of open house visits by friends and family.
A survey by the Sunday Bulletin showed that Mandarin oranges are a must during the festivities. One of the popular outlets selling these oranges is Warisan Utamajaya Emporium & Supermarket in Jalan Muara, which is also holding a Mandarin orange eating competition for the public today.
