PADUKA Seri Begawan Sultan Science College students Chow Jun Wei and Muhammad Khairin bin Haji Fadzil will be participating at the International Science Youth Forum 2017 (ISYF 2017) in Singapore from January 15 – 19.

The students left for the city state from the Brunei International Airport yesterday.

Lead Teacher for Gifted Education Haji Eddy Masirwan bin Haji Dollah from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College is accompanying the students at the international class event.

Haji Ali Yusri bin Haji Abdul Ghafor, Acting Head of Special Education Unit, and Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College Acting Principal Haji Ismail bin Haji Zainal were also at the airport to bid the delegation farewell.

The ISYF is a science enrichment programme for students from all over the globe, jointly organised by Hwa Chong Institution and Nanyang Technological University, and supported by the Ministry of Education of Singapore.

Gifted Brunei students and their Science teachers have been selected to participate at ISYF since its inception in 2009.

Students who previously attended ISYF have continued to pursue further education in Science and Technology.

ISYF aims to provide high-ability students with opportunities to be engaged in Science. To inspire students, Nobel Laureates and other eminent scientists will speak on their life experiences. This creates greater awareness among the youth on the importance of broad-based knowledge, keen curiosity, relentless tenacity and a global outlook in the pursuit of scientific excellence.

Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss their own research with students from different countries and take part in hands-on science activities.

Activities are designed to promote mutual co-operation, understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, and at the same time, spark a common passion for science and research.

Through professional sharing, training workshops, as well as networking with scientists and among Science educators, ISYF helps build the competencies of teachers.

It also serves as a valuable opportunity for schools to establish and develop close ties with one another and to explore the possibility of future collaborations.

This year’s invited Nobel Laureates are Sir Anthony James Leggett (Nobel Prize in Physics in 2003), Sir Andre Geim (Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010), Sir Tim Hunt (Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 2001), Professor Rudolph A Marcus (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1992), Professor Barbara Liskov (The Turing Award in 2008) and Professor Vladimir Voevodsky (The Field Medals in 2001).

Chow Jun Wei will present his poster on ‘The Effects of Fruit Skins on the Rate of Growth of Plants’ at the poster competition, and Muhammad Khairin bin Haji Fadzil will present his poster on ‘Methods of Conserving Water’ at a poster exhibition and presentation.

At the teachers’ session, Haji Eddy Masirwan will be presenting on the topic ‘Mumtaz Programme (School’s Best Practice).’

Students in these programmes were nominated by the school and selected following a series of screening processes conducted by the Gifted Education Programmes and Services (GEPS) at the Special Education Unit. It is one of the ways to identify students for international gifted programmes.

In addition to local programmes, participation in overseas programmes is considered as one of the platforms to extend and develop the gifts and talents of students.

It is hoped the programmes will be able to draw students’ gifted abilities and allow them build to an international network for their career and future research in the field of Science and Technology.

With this, it is anticipated the students can later contribute to raising the Asean+3 region status.
