THE new members appointed to the Legislative Council (LegCo) as District Representatives have an important role, duty and responsibility in bringing forward proposals that are significant and strategic for the benefit of the people of Brunei Darussalam while also helping the government with national development efforts.

This was highlighted by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs, while delivering a speech yesterday during a meeting with Mukim Penghulus, village heads and chiefs of longhouses from all four districts of the country at the Legislative Council Building.

The LegCo was reconstituted with new members on January 13.

Ten members were appointed to the LegCo as District Representatives – five from Brunei-Muara, two each from Belait and Tutong and one from Temburong.

The duties and responsibilities of each District Representative of LegCo for their respective zones were explained in the meeting.

In his speech, the minister congratulated the new members on their appointment.

He highlighted that the members’ appointment entrusts them with a role, duty and responsibility to put forward significant and strategic proposals for the benefit of the citizens and residents of the country, while at the same time helping the government in efforts for national development.

“We must always remember the titahs of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam that have repeatedly called on LegCo members to focus on contributing ideas or views regarding strategic issues that can help in enhancing the socio-economic welfare of the citizens and residents of this country in a holistic and sustainable way, primarily in supporting policies of the government, which include encouraging more locals to work in the private sector and also the government’s efforts to diversify the country’s economic resources,” said the minister.

He stated that the appointment of the LegCo members as District Representatives is also to give an opportunity for the government to hear the voice of the people in a broader way as well as to present the agenda and goals of the government to the people so that they are understood better and clearer.

“I fully trust in the credibility, integrity and leadership of the District Representative LegCo members, Insya Allah the challenges in carrying out the role, duties and responsibilities entrusted will be carried out efficiently and effectively,” affirmed the minister.

“Naturally, the hopes and expectations of the public on the LegCo members are very high not only among Mukim Penghulus, village heads and chiefs of longhouses but also the communities in the mukims and villages as a whole,” he noted.

“On this occasion I also wish to remind the LegCo members as District Representatives to continue to focus on their duties as Mukim Penghulus and village heads in caring for the welfare and wellbeing of the people in their respective mukims and villages.

“I fully hope that you (all Mukim Penghulus, village heads and chiefs of longhouses and all members of district offices and the Ministry of Home Affairs) will all be able to provide support and cooperation to the LegCo members in carrying out their duties and responsibilities as entrusted and to support a whole-of-nation approach, moving as one team towards realising the Brunei Vision 2035, which is anchored to the teachings of Islam and Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB),” he added.

In attendance at yesterday’s event were Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, along with deputy permanent secretaries and senior officers from the ministry.
