IT IS rare to hear about a Bruneian technology entrepreneur winning international acclaim, but Brandon Ng, the co-founder of Hong Kong-based energy startup, Ampd Energy, is proving that this tiny Southeast Asian country can produce globally savvy entrepreneurs.
To help Asia wean off its reliance on diesel generators and lead acid batteries, Ng and his team have developed a breakthrough on-grid energy storage system (ESS) that is environmentally friendly and reliable.
Ampd Energy’s launch product, branded Ampd Silo, uses advanced, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to store electricity when power is available, and then provide energy when the main power source fails.
In recognition of the innovative technology and its ability to serve the world, Ampd Energy was placed first runner-up in the prestigious Engadget Best Startup Award at the recent Consumer Electrics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It also won a CES Innovation Award in the ‘Tech for a Better World’ category.
“It’s incredibly humbling for Ampd Energy to be recognised on the world stage, amidst the industry giants at the CES,” said Ng.
To date, Ampd Energy has secured a US$3.7 million seed investment, one of the largest seed rounds for a Hong Kong startup. Ng acknowledges the support of Ampd Energy by Bruneian investors, noting that “the support of individual investors in Brunei has been critical in getting Ampd Energy off the ground since its establishment in 2014”.
The company is a product of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park’s Incu-Tech incubation programme.
Ng is proud to represent Brunei and pave the way for other local entrepreneurs. “Growing up in Brunei, I benefited tremendously from Brunei’s world-class education system. I think that the goals of Vision 2035 are well-suited for a world increasingly dominated by ideas, know-how and most importantly execution… It is a privilege for me to take my Bruneian identity through Ampd Energy, to compete with the best on the global stage.”
