THE Jerudong International School (JIS) held its Year 8 Design and Making Day in the Design and Technology (D&T) classes in the Q Block yesterday.
Alex Perry, Head Technician, said that there were about 150 Year 7 and 180 Year 8 students that took part in the event, divided into groups of four to five persons. The event which started from 8am to 12pm, featured three different elements comprising food technology, textile and creation of a vehicle model from materials provided by the teacher.
In the food technology class, teachers prepared three types of food items – vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates. Students were given time to think and share ideas on preparing their own recipes from the items provided.
In the other D&T classes, students were tasked to design and make a rubber band-powered vehicle that will move in a straight direction for as far as possible. They were given 20 minutes of planning time to come up with ideas for the design using the materials provided.
They were given materials such as A4 white paper, A4 corflute, A5 grey board, straws, cotton reel, wheels, paper clips, toothpicks, pasta tubes, string, rubber bands, dowel rod and tape to create the moving vehicle.
The students were divided into groups of four or five.
