THE ‘Escape Room’, a team based puzzle solving game business concept that made its debut last year, continues to be popular among the young generation.
Some say that the game is also good for the tech-savvy populace; where today’s generation are investing so much time on social media and digital devices, having a three-dimensional and tactile experience has become more important than ever.
There are now around three escape room operators in the country and the trend has no sign of fading away as operators continue to innovate.
The latest to enter the growing industry – the Escape Square, a full-fledged local escape game operator which was established last December, believes that through continuous innovation the concept will stay in the country.
In an interview with Hiro Tien, the founder of Escape Square, he said to keep people coming back, he believed it is important to continually innovate the games. “We do so every six months or so. Another thing we believe is that a strong storyline aligned with puzzle delivery is needed to keep the audience captivated. It is sort of like the movies, we keep going back but the bar is raised every time we catch a better movie,” he explained.
The establishment currently offers three games intricately designed and set up to resemble that of 1900s London mystery crime scenes. The games are Murder in the Office (1995), Kidnapping in the Classroom (1989) and The Scorpio Killer’s Residence (1971).
The escape game is a type of popular real life physical adventure in which a group of people are locked in a themed room and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit.
“I first came across the concept of escape games when I was on holiday in Thailand, I couldn’t stop playing more afterwards in places like Malaysia, Singapore, London, and the rest of UK. Of all genres, detective games attracted me the most as I am an avid fan of Sherlock Holmes and Edogawa Conan from the comic. Put that together with how much I missed video games as a kid and you get something like The Escape Square,” said the founder.
Escape Room games are taking the world by storm because of their ability to put a team’s relationship and skills to a test. Observation and critical thinking skills are also put to use during the games. Themes are not limited and can come in various forms ranging from prison cells, haunted premises, basements and so on. Furthermore, escape games provide great a bonding experience for friends, families and corporate teams.
