AHMAD Zulwaqar bin Suhaili and Dayangku Amal Zahirah binti Pengiran Haji Jofri emerged as the Qari and Qariah champions respectively in the National Level Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQBK) held Thursday evening at the Digadong Hall, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports building.
Other winners for the Qari category were Awangku Adi Nazri bin Pengiran Haji Jofri, who finished second, while third place went to Muhammad Sa’dun bin Suhaili – the previous year’s Qari champion.
For Qariah, second place went to Dayangku Fauziah Nadhirah binti Pengiran Haji Jofri, while third place was taken by Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana binti Pengiran Marjuki – last year’s Qariah champion.
As guest of honour to present the prizes was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof.
Also present were the Permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Haji Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad and Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil.
Acting Director of Youth and Sports, Haji Zafri bin Haji Mohamed, in his capacity as the event chairman, said during his speech that this year as many as 101 individuals from all four districts partook in the competition, compared to 98 participants in 2016 and 77 in 2015.
The competition began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Mosque Affairs Officer, Haji Ali Yussof bin Haji Arshad, followed by a speech by the guest of honour.
The event was enlivened with a Tausyeh performance from the Al-Wildan group.
This was followed by the announcement of the competition results by the chairman of judges, Pengiran Haji Amiruddin bin Pengiran Haji Damit.
The Qari and Qariah champions each received a champion’s trophy, challenge trophy, $2,000 cash prize and participation certificate.
Second place winners for either category received a challenge trophy, $1,500 cash prize and participation certificate each, while third place winners were awarded a challenge trophy, $1,000 cash prize and a participation certificate each.
Each of the remaining participants received a challenge trophy, $500 cash prize and participation certificate.
The competition has been organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports since the 1980s and it has successfully produced Qaris and Qariahs with the calibre and competitiveness to compete at top level.
It also serves as a means to improve the quality of Al-Quran recitation among the youths in Brunei and to instil a bond between them through the running of religious programmes.
The competition is also a platform for the scouting of talents and representatives for the Youth Southeast Asia Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran competition, which will be organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
