THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) recently received a courtesy call from a delegation representing the International Cooperation Bureau of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the People’s Republic of China, led by its Director General, Guo Xingwang.
The Chinese delegation was received by Haji Abdullah Soefri bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Assistant Solicitor General, who was accompanied by several senior officers from the Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers.
Director General Guo speaking on behalf of Professor Cao Jianming, the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Pro-curatorate of the People’s Republic of China, thanked the Brunei Government for its continuing support towards the China-Asean Prosecutors-General Conference, held annually as a regional and multilateral international cooperation mechanism in the prosecutorial field.
Assistant Solicitor General Haji Abdullah Soefri, expressed his thanks to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the People’s Republic of China for its steadfast commitment and unwavering support towards the conference, which has allowed China and Asean member states to exchange ideas on addressing the scourge of transnational organised crime, while developing international legal cooperation capabilities at the same time.
During the courtesy call, both sides focussed on the preparations for the 11th China-Asean Prosecutors-General Conference, to be held in Bandar Seri Begawan in 2018.
In light of global events indicating the rise of transnational crime involving the use of technology and emerging cybersecurity threats, the Attorney General’s Chambers informed the Chinese delegation about the proposed theme of the upcoming conference, which is ‘Enhancing Capabilities and Cooperation in Combatting Cybercrime’.
Further initiatives to strengthen information exchange through the China-Asean Prosecutors Exchange and Training Base, were also discussed.
The Chinese delegation also extended Professor Cao Jianming’s invitation to Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati binti Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Salleh, the Attorney General of Brunei Darussalam, to attend the 22nd International Association of Prosecutors Conference from September 10-15, in Beijing.
The courtesy call concluded with an exchange of gifts.
Brunei Darussalam has been participating in the China-Asean Prosecutors General Conference since its establishment in 2004, to promote regional capacity-building of prosecutorial organs for dealing with transnational crime.
In 2002, the Attorney General’s Chambers of Brunei Darussalam and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the People’s Republic of China signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of legal cooperation aimed at strengthening relationships between the two offices in the fields of mutual legal assistance, training and information exchange.
