A ONE-DAY seminar and workshop was held yesterday at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB) Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) to promote awareness on independent job opportunities and entrepreneurship amongst Bruneian youths.
Organised by third year students at UBD, in collaboration with the Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM), the seminar also hoped to motivate more youths to take the first steps in developing their own business ideas.
In her keynote address, MKM President Datin Paduka Hajah Intan binti Haji Mohd Kassim, who is also Brunei’s Asean Commissioner for Children, posed the question on whether the country is producing a new generation of visionary entrepreneurs with the determination to succeed.
“In Brunei, it is nice to see an increase in the number of young people taking the entrepreneurial leap,” she said. “With our country facing an economic downturn, jobs are hard to find and young people resort to business.
“While it is an excellent move towards less state reliance, the fear is that the dominant feature of entrepreneurship in our country will be necessity-based as opposed to an opportunity-based entrepreneurship. Going into business is just the last option to earn money,” she said.
“You can learn to acquire the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur. You learn from the life experiences of successful people and how they achieved success through choice of business, time, exceptional ideas and so on,” she added.
During the seminar, several young entrepreneurs shared their thoughts with the audience on unlocking business potential, understanding challenges and overcoming failures.
The workshop was conducted by a representative from LiveWIRE Brunei, who highlighted the importance of originality and innovations.
The participants comprised students from institutions of higher learning, DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) personnel and members of the public.
