NURSES, midwives, allied health professionals and members of the public took to Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the nation’s capital yesterday to participate in the Nurses and Midwives’ Day hosted by the Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC).
The event, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Institute of Health Sciences, Brunei Darussalam Nurses Association (Penjuru), The Brunei Cancer Centre and the Brunei Neuroscience, Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre, was held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale and to mark the contributions of nurses, midwives and other health professionals.
Around 500 nurses, midwives, healthcare workers and members of the public participated in the Nurses and Midwives’ Parade led by the Executive Director and Medical Director and Director of Nursing of JPMC, Chung Yea Fui.
Treasure hunts, a blood donation drive, free health assessments and basic life saving demonstrations were also conducted by students from the UBD’s Institute of Health Sciences.
This year’s ‘International Nurses’ Day’, held on May 12, carried the theme ‘Nurses: A Voice To Lead, Achieving Sustainable Development Goals’; while the theme for International Midwives’ Day (May 5) was ‘Midwives, Mothers and Families: Partners for Life!’
“Through today’s activities, we hope to embed messages of this noble profession from past themes into the present and future. Whether they are nurses, midwives or other health professionals at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital or JPMC, we hope a collaboration of this nature would extend to their work place to address areas such as patient safety to be on par with recognised international standards,” said Chung Yea Fui.
