A BRIEF but heavy storm yesterday afternoon caused havoc in a number of areas, uprooting trees and causing damage to vehicles.

Several cars parked in the vicinity of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex area were affected by the gusty wind and rain.

According to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department, the brief but powerful storm that carried with it strong winds, was a “locally developed weather effect” that began in Bandar Seri Begawan and lasted for about 30-45 minutes before it moved on to the Temburong District.

Meanwhile, the department issued a weather advisory, warning of strong winds of up to 40km/h.

Heavy winds from the sea are expected to move to the coastline, it said, adding that risk of flash floods are likely during heavy or thundery showers, especially at low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department were called into action following the incident.

The Operation Centre of the department said it received an emergency call about fallen tree branches near the Yayasan Complex in the capital.

Led by ABKS 63 Haji Ramli bin Haji Abdul Rahman, a fire engine and five personnel were despatched to the scene to clear the branches.

Two vehicles parked at the area were damaged by the fallen branches. No one was hurt in the incident.

Meanwhile, at Kampong Pulaie, the roof top of a house was blown away in the strong wind, and the Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call about the incident at 2.49pm.

Led by ASO Haji Roslan bin Haji Bakir, four personnel and a fire engine rushed to the scene.

The roofs that were blown away were of the living room, kitchen and bathroom.

The rescue personnel have put up a canvas temporarily over the affected area to reduce damages from rain and heat.

No one was injured in the incident.
