Brunei, Singapore hold 2nd annual bilateral meeting

BRUNEI Darussalam and Singapore remain committed to working together to combat increasing security challenges that affect both countries and beyond their borders.

The two countries are also ready to enhance cooperation and coordination between their enforcement agencies.

At the 2nd annual bilateral meeting between the Security and Enforcement Division at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs at the PMO Building in Jalan Perdana Menteri yesterday, the meeting’s chairman Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary (Media and Cabinet) at the PMO, said the talks provided an avenue to meet, discuss and share operational experiences as well as best practices on issues such as combating terrorism and transnational crimes.

The meeting was inaugurated last year in Singapore.

“Through these meetings, we certainly hope to establish an ongoing exchange of information pertaining to the crime trends and domestic experiences in addressing the issues of terrorism, cybercrime, lost and stolen travel document and illicit drug trafficking,” he added.

The leader of the Singaporean delegation, Leo Yip, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singapore said that interactions and bilateral exchanges will help both countries broaden, nurture and strengthen understanding between the two countries, especially in security and enforcement.

According to the PMO, among the agenda of the meeting were the sharing of operational experience in combating terrorism and transnational crimes, exchange of information pertaining to crime trends and domestic experiences in the fight against terrorism, illicit drug trafficking, trafficking in persons, cybercrime, money laundering, sea piracy and other issues as mutually agreed by both countries and as well as exploring training opportunities for law enforcement officers and agencies.

Other issues discussed were the sharing of information on crime situation and efforts in combating transnational crimes by both countries and other areas of mutual interest.

During their stay in Brunei, the Singaporean delegation also made working visits to the State Control Centre at the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Al-Islah Rehabilitation Centre of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), as well as participated in friendly sporting events.

Following the signing of the Letter of Intent between the PMO (Security and Enforcement) of Brunei Darussalam and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singapore on September 10, 2014, the countries held the first bilateral meeting in Singapore in 2015.

One of the decisions of the first bilateral meeting was to hold an annual programme of cooperation such as the Joint Annual Training Exchange Programme for Senior Officers of Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.

With the high spirit of cooperation, both countries held their First Joint Annual Training Exchange Programme from November 16-27, 2015 in Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
